Sure, but it is going to get a DTC Reset when you swap them, so it is probably easier to just reflash. For the cost of an ECU, you can get the software and the adapter.

This whole thing seems like tuners have solid grounds for a lawsuit. I hope the state gets sued and would gladly contribute $$ to the cause.

And the software is $349 which gives you much more flexibility in this situation.

Perhaps, but dealing with that usually is a loss even if you win

    litigate against the state ??????

already regulations on the books not giving a handful o tuners a basis/standing

it would have to be a class action suite

essentially Every Tuner or in a state whereby the regs were ambiguous

decades ago a state wrote a helmet law following suit with quite a few

many bikers thought they were spoon fed

then they saw an opening..................the law in simple terms indicated

    helmets must be worn

so hundreds wore them everywhere save the ‘ Head ‘..................

they went to court as the law NEVER Stated ‘ helmets must be worn on the head ‘
    ( worn on knees....elbows......feet etc )

cases were thrown out until the next year when the law was written correctly

later it took decades for repeal in approx 1 dozen other states

This is ridiculous. I doubt there won't be ways around it, just inconvenience and more cost involved. Did not read the this whole thread, but what exactly warrants California to have an issue with ECU tunes? Is there detectable traces of increased smog?

Reminds me of aftermarket intakes, specifically for a civic. Absolutely zero difference physically between a carb certified one and non carb. Only difference is one company paid enormous amounts of money to the state for "rigorous testing and approval." Same deal here. Carb approved tunes will still pass smog. Only the biggest companies can afford to get this approval.

Sad part is this is more aimed at tuner and muscle cars. Where tuning is more common and more about max horsepower.

    volkswagen got dinged for it

they found a way to to circumvent some of the EPA ‘ test shak ‘ criteria

they bought them back.................then resold them

i know 2 individuals that have the diesels.....................totally satisfied !!!!

any truly think volkswagen in the past are the ONLY that did a work around ( not reach around fellas )

they were the ONLY to get caught

My theory is it’s aimed at the endless sideshows that keep happening. Much like the exhaust fine that went into effect awhile back that everyone went crazy over. Not regularly enforced, just meant for a certain group of people if caught. Except this time around everyone is effected.

Cali has ALWAYS had the strongest & strangest EPA regs

    they intimidate the detroit manufacturers

no doubt the underlying reasons many marques are trotting out electric models

to appease the beaureaucrats yet gain real world mileage & data

if not a wave an undertow

Thanks for sharing! We took the rental with a tune in today, passed no issues with KDMAX

@trdquoc Any thoughts why they don't see it. Maybe it looks like a TSB to them.

I think it’s because the tune is very “mild”… I have no idea what it was checking, but the test took like 10 minutes of being hooked up… maybe it was sending and receiving data or checking certain parameters.

Is that a typical amount of time for the hookup?

I believe so if you don't require a certificate. If you're just getting a pass/no pass test it's quick. They do the test straight to the OBD2 port without any tail pipe emissions testing. It's weird... not like they used to back in the day.
