California lawmakers have sent the governor a bill making it a misdemeanor for openly carrying an unloaded handgun in public, a practice popular among certain gun enthusiasts.

The Assembly on Friday passed AB144 on a 44-30 vote after it was approved by the Senate.

I understand the freedom to, but why would anyone do that anyway if it's unloaded?

I agree with this law, alls carrying a unloaded pistol around with you does is say "hey I'm a tough guy with a tiny dick who likes to look like Rambo"

my civil rights are non negotiable....an unloaded pistol with ammo nearby is better than no gun and no ammo nearby. you do realize youre supporting racism right?? the law that made open carry unloaded was in response to armed black men(black panthers)

In California, it's more of a statement then anything else. We have some of the most strict gun laws in the country. There is almost no chance of a CCW in this state, the unloaded open carry was one of the few gun freedoms we had left. Don't get me wrong, I agree unloaded open carry is lame but out here on the left coast, it was one of the few rights we had left.

One of a few guys that I know who can carry concealed here in CA loves when people find out about his permit and ask "is it loaded". His answer: "you ever try to kill someone with a gun that's NOT loaded?":D

I hope that someday soon our state will stop trying to deny our rights. Right now the only way I know of to get a CCW here is to become a cop. I know one guy who became a cop only because he wanted that CCW. Not really the best reason, eh?

One more reason I'll stay in TN thank you very much. I grew up shooting and owning guns. I'm not a red neck, just one of those guys that feel it's my right to protect my family and myself. I'll steer clear of the left coast.

agreed. i have three guns myself here in CA and have no problem getting or owning them. there's no need to walk around with an unloaded gun on your person. agree that who knows if it's loaded or not, and it is obviously because you're trying to prove something, or compensate.

Carrying a unloaded gun is a great way to get shot by somebody carrying a loaded one. I also believe carrying openly makes you a target and takes away the huge advantage of concealment when things go to shit. Just my opininions formulated over the last 20 years carrying at work.

The reason this bill was introduced was to stop the protests by gun rights advocates who demonstrate legally in public with unloaded guns. These protesters will no longer be able to bring guns to these demonstrations...

This bill is an affront to our first and second amendment rights.

This law would be a lot more tolerable if it compromised by making California a Shall Issue state, allowing greater access to licensed conceal carry.

If you criminalize guns, only criminals have guns.
