I need to talk the old lady into a trip like this. I am trying to talk her into a road trip on the 395 from southern Cali to Oregon.

We have one, but he's old and not much of an outdoors type. Last time we took him he was pretty paranoid. LOL

Man I love threads like this one. We didn't get to go to Colorado this year so I get to live vicariously through you. Thanks for all the pictures and trip report. If you ever get a chance try Southern Colorado and the San Juan Mountains around Durango, Silverton, and Ouray. I think you will love it there. I think I've been on every trail there and the views are gorgeous.

    Thanks once again!

Great trip report. Do you think you could have gone everywhere you went with stock tires and suspension? I'm trying to figure out what to do to my 2016 TRD OR........

Awesome! My girlfriend and I just did something very similar.. Yosemite, zion, Bryce, Arches/Moab, Four Corners, Horseshoe Bend, and home. And we just moved to Concord too!
We borrowed a RTT as well and it was sooo nice to have, I'm going to start saving up for one now.
    Nice trip and nice pictures!

Probably could have done 85% in stock configuration. I wouldn't trust the stock tires though.

Loved your thread man! I just got back from a 12 day trip into Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota. I should put together a thread like this one. We put on 3700 miles and loved every one!

    Thanks for the post!

Thanks for sharing this post! My husband, 5 month old son and 2 dogs will be embarking on a month long road trip in September through the 4 corner states, also starting in the bay area. We will be blowing through Cali & Nevada to start the real adventure off in SLC, UT. Then, Denver, CO -> Santa Fe, NM -> Grand Canyon, AZ -> Grand Staircase-Bryce-Zion, UT ->Joshua Tree, CA -> Bay Area. We also just added a Tepui RTT (Gran Sabana) to our ride and cannot wait to use it. You provided some helpful tips, especially with food storage. I was planning on pre-making a bunch of food beforr hand but wasnt sure how to store it. Vacuum seal - genius!
    I have a few ?'s:
    1) What cooler do you have (I see its Coleman, but which one) And how well did it do for keeping the food truly frozen and not just mushy?
    2) For your shell, did you have the cargo net installed by the installers of the shell or did you do that yourself? Same ? for the axe.
    3) 12 days and 4000 miles...not bad! A few years ago we did 4k miles in 17 days (CA->NV->UT->ID->MT->Calgary->Vancover Island->WA->OR->CA) Do you feel you were rushed at all and wish you spent more time in certain places? If so, where?

Side note for your next trip: As you can see in one of my photos, we also have basket. This is especially helpful if your family grows, but if not, it is still nice. As you know, the backseat of a Tacoma is small. So,with baby stuff taking up nearly all the backseat and the dogs taking up half of thr bed of the truck, the basket on top really helps with the overflow of stuff. The RTT installer said he has never seen a set up like ours, so we are pretty stoked on it.

    Thanks!20160711_101828.jpg IMG952564.jpg

Holy cow, road trip with a baby!? Good for you guys!

    1. It's a Coleman Extreme, 70qt. Our food defrosted after a few days but it did not thaw out completely for quite a while. Having it all frozen helps keep the cooler cold, and of course, limit the opening closing as much as you can. I've gone through several coolers and this one is pretty darn good, might be the best I've used that isn't a super higher dollar Yeti or the like.

    2. The cargo net was installed when I ordered the shell by the dealer. I installed the axe carrier myself. The holders are quick fists. I simply removed the stock screws on the top hinges and bought longer ones. Used nuts and washers to hold the quick fists on.

    3. Well, we weren't really planning on Colorado so we did feel rushed in a sense, but it was more due to lack of planning. I guess in hindsight I would have stayed more towards the Aspen region and skipped Rocky Mountain National Park. But that's just me.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the pics of the basket, I've been thinking about adding something along those lines in the future. For now, it's just us two so we're okay on space.

Great trip and documentation! Was it Chihuahua Gulch that you turned around on near Keystone?

Thanks. It was Chihuahua. Familiar with it I guess? Been in it recently? Id like validation that turning tail was not baseless. Lol.
