It does make me wonder, watching these crash vids, if modifying the cab mount is a good idea. I understand that most will weld a plate on it, but making it narrower has to have some ultimate effect on its strength front-to-back. It seems in the frame-by-frame video that the tire and wheel are kept out of the cab by the cab mount.

Has here anyone ever seen a modified cab mount fail in an accident? Lived to tell the tale?

    I can't see a CMC being better.

That’s what I have now. Have been considering larger, but on the fence about the CMC, and a few other negatives from larger skins.

When you cut for a cmc, you cut at an angle. At the outer edge where the most is taken off, it’s only maybe 1.5” at most and tapers inward from there.

I think any negative effect would be negligible at best.

You can go up to 33” if you run 255 width without any alteration whatsoever. 255/75/17 is an even 32”

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.

The 3rd Gen cab mount is larger then the 2nd gen as well and guys have been chopping 2nd gens for over a decade.

While I somewhat agree, if you look at the front edge of that big hole for the resilient mount, there isn’t really that much meat there to resist front-to-back deflection. Looks like it would tear apart. For sure the cab-mount has been weakened by the change, but by how much? Who knows?

Anyways.....clearly the data point I seek is not easily come by without a serious effort to test the effect. Maybe “don’t crash” is the best advice.

Just a side note. It is interesting how they put the two colours of paint on the dummies face so they can see how his face-plant happened in the white skin of the airbag. Cool.

I enjoy going off road. I will drive on the beach and recently riding some rocky trails. I learned I needed a little modification the first time I hit the beach when I bought my brand new 2000 SR5 Taco back in the day..I now have a 2017Taco OR and started adding from the get go. I don’t know if I can cut my Taco, but considering the CMC after I get a little lift and let someone else chop..
If I can afford it, I’ll do it! I only have one life so going to do what I can while I am here! I use to ride like the guy above, I hit the side of a Chevy 1500 and just enjoying the Taco for now. I also would surf with sharks in the water. I am not crazy, but I am not getting any younger.
If you believe you’re not strictly a mall crawler and will actually hit trails that warrant a little modification, then do it,enjoy it, and don’t look back! If it’s a mall crawler or light trails then don’t chop it! But still enjoy it and don’t second guess yourself!

Chopping the cab mount isn't going to make a difference in a crash. If you hit something hard enough to bring the cab mount into play you have more serious problems to worry about.

I guess I disagree. In the video, the tire and wheel are kept out of the cab by what looks like the mount (to me). Maybe the “dummy” might walk away from this crash very bashed and bruised, but without his legs fatally stuffed up into his rib cage by his front wheel? I dunno. In my opinion, I believe the cab mount is part of crash survivability, the only question is whether chopping it makes it less effective.

It's not really part of the crush zone...the small piece of metal that's cut off is inconsequential. The mount in that type of crash is going to be fucked regardless. And that mount isn't preventing anything from coming into the cab..
