Cab mount chop with 285's, even with 4"bs wheels

    Okay, been thinking long and hard about lifting the taco. I wanna go with OME's in the front with the 13mm spacer for a full 3", the whole reason why i want to lift is to of course fit bigger tires....

    My question is about rubbing issues with 285's, i couldn't find a straight forward answer in the threads.

    If i get wheels with 4" backspacing R16 (wheelers offroad steelies) and throw some 285/70/16's on them will i still have to Cab mount chop? I'm aware that i will have to trim some of my fender.

    EDIT: Read that with wheel spacers someone didnt need the cab mount chop, but i'm trying to avoid wheel spacers.

    I will agree with this. Every truck seems to come out a little differant. I have 3" of lift with eibachs and 5100's with top plate spacers and LR UCAs. My rims have 4.5bs. 285 75 16 with only minor rubbing in the front of fender well. I have wheeled it a little and I dont think I will need to chop the cab mount. It might rub a little at full flex, but not enough to cut it up. I have read about lots of others. It works for some and not for others. Dont know WTF. Good Luck!

    Im not positive about this but with less backspacing i think you are more likely to rub on the cab mount. If you push the tire further out it increases the turning radius. Am i right about this? So if you have 4" backspacing vs. 4.5 you are more likely to rub i think.

    Less backspacing == more likely to rub on fenders, cab mount, etc...

    More backspacing == more likely to rub tire on upper control arm.

    Also, you're less likely to rub with a 285/70R16 (if you can even FIND such a tire) because that's a smaller tire than most folks run with a 3" lift. Typically in that case folks run either 285/75R16 or 285/70R17.

    I am not too sure about how the backspacing with affect cab mount rubbing, but what you say makes sense to me Evanmb. That said, I also suspect the way your alignment is set would also have some affect on where and how much rubbing you will get. As stated earlier, you likely can't know for sure until you try putting them on.

    OK, you couldn't find a straight answer because every truck is a little different and every owner is a little different.

    Some folks don't wanna rub even at full compression at full lock. That's a *very* tough call to achieve and they'll end up trimming the absolute max.

    Some folks drive relatively gently, never even turn to full lock, and don't have a delicate ear listening out for rubbing. Mild rubbing, after all, is often difficult to detect.

    Aside from all that - how the truck is aligned after the lift is installed has a pretty big impact. The alignement cams can move the wheel in the wheelwell forward and backward by an inch or so. You can see where that can make a pretty big difference no?

    For myself, I didn't trim my cab mount until after I installed new upper control arms. Of course, before that, my alignment was running at a caster angle of roughly right around zero degrees, which made the truck drive kinda "twitchy" or "skittish" for want of a better word.

    Sorry to thread jack OP. Steve, awesome right up on the OME installation, it has helped me alot. I finished the front yesterday and as we speak i am putting in my dakars.

    First of all, Thanks to all of you who replied, I'm serious about lifting my truck and I wanna do it the right way the first time.

    Basically I wanna run a 33" tire with an x"width, I don't even know how guys are running 35's with 3" lifts. I really like maxamillion's taco and he's running 35's if I'm correct. I just don't want to have to re-gear. If it comes down to it I'm willing to do the cab mount chop though.

    The reason why I would get 4"bs wheels is for a less chance of rubbing as some of you guys said. Thanks for your guy's input as it would be annoying to pm everyone who has 3" of lift and 33's.

    It's not a matter of being willing to do it, If you go larger than 265/75/16 or 17, You ARE going to be chopping the cab mount... period... as well as trimming a fair amount of plastic in & around the inner skirts of fender wells.... pretty straight forward answer huh ?....:)

    Running 33" or larger tires? Using a uniball UCA that adds caster? You will likely have some small rubbing issues AFTER the cab mount chop.

    I had to put caster over 3 degrees and REALLY flatten the pinch weld... plus extra plastic trimming.

    Im running ome, toytec top spacer, lr upper control arms. Runn nitto trail grapplers durring summer, 285/75r16. Rims 4.5 back spacing. My tires rubbed on body mounts. Did the chop and a full lock no more rub. This summer switching rims to 4.75 bs with 1.25 spacer ill get back to u on that lol

    Just now saw this haha. Yeah the Breadboard is bomb! Or was bomb, it's still good but has gone downhill. That's how it is with a lot of the restaurants here now. I was working at Callahans lodge right off the Mt. A exit for awhile.
