I removed those annoying stickers on the sun visor.
Irrelevant. Central heating has required a filter since longer than I've been alive. In 30 years of driving, and 9 different vehicles, this is only the second one that has a cabin air filter. Which is exactly why I'm asking of they're strictly for passenger comfort, because they clearly weren't necessary in older vehicles.

In the old days dust just came out of your vents, really wasn’t an issue.

Wasn't a issue for you, but as somebody with asthma... it makes a world of difference

It's definitely changed from when I was active here 10-15 years ago....

The common theme is this: Someone asks a "question" when they're really just looking for confirmation bias. The question gets answered multiple times but OP either doesn't read or doesn't get the answers his ego wants to hear. So then HE gets butthurt and starts trying to re-frame the question and make it personal, saying "everyone else in the thread" is overreacting

The cabin filter comes first in front of all the expensive stuff in the HVAC box. Remove at your own financial risk. The windows being open or closed has nothing to do with debris possibly getting pulled in and stuck in the HVAC box

No , I get it. Asthma has got to be a challenge. I just don’t understand why people think it’s necessary to be smarter than the engineer designing stuff. I don’t like seatbelts, but they saved my life, thank you Volvo.

Good advice, @tcjacado. Here's what the cabin air filter looked like in my Lexus RX one time when I let checking & changing go too long. I'm a lot more diligent now, and there's no way I'd run without these cheap and easy-to-change filters.

I acknowledged on the second page that it's smart to keep it. The second page. Everything before and after that has been clarifying as to why I asked the question in the first place.

Your answers from the 2nd page:

    ...
I'm not concerned about the cost, but I also don't think see the point in wasting money on something that isnt necessary. That's exactly why I'm asking if it's necessary to protect the heater core or evaporator.
    ...

    ...
You do know that opening the window doesn't disable the heating & cooling system, don't you? The two are not mutually exclusive. Some of us enjoy driving around with heat on the feet, while letting a nice cool breeze through the cabin.
    ...

    ...
Exactly what I was wondering. So it is necessary beyond simply protecting the cabin air quality.
    ...

Your answers from the 3rd page:

    ...
That makes sense. In 30 years of driving, I've only had 1 other vehicle with a cabin air filter, and I'm just not familiar enough with modern vehicles to know if they're necessary to protect the modern components, or if they're strictly for passenger comfort.
    ...
    ...
I'm not arguing. I'm simply asking a question, looking for advice from people who are more knowledgeable about modern vehicles than I am. For some reason, grown men are getting their feelings hurt about a question.
    ...
    ...
I'm not questioning what you're saying. In fact, I acknowledged earlier in the thread that it makes sense to keep the filter. I was simply further explaining why I asked the question in the first place.

Your comment wasn't butt-hurt, but some of the others were. I should have clarified. It seems to be a common theme in this forum lately. A lot of people angry over nothing. But I guess the whole world is like that these days...
    ...

You asked why a cabin filter was necessary when you *sometimes* drive with the window open. The engineering-based answers gave you the reasons and you COULD HAVE said "Yeah, I was just asking. Makes perfect sense. Thanks for the clarification."

Instead you repeat "I was not arguing" in almost every post and keep asking why it was engineered that way. I would think you worried more about leaking front oil seals (a real problem) instead of a cheap little air filter that only needs changing once a year for most people.

the dart was was engineered to consume those bugs. the Toyota was engineered to fail without the dealer selling 80 % of owners the $110 cabin filter service

Did you seriously just quote EVERY comment I've made, and still miss the fact that I acknowledged multiple times that the air filter does indeed serve a purpose beyond passenger comfort?

I only run a cabin in during fire season.

I drive dirt roads daily, too lazy to run a washable filter. So I have a dusty dash.

You didn’t read the part about the open windows…. Mine is useless for the same reason as well. But I do keep it for when I am following someone on a dirt road, even from far back, or when passing by smoke from a fire or other fumes. When that happens, I roll up the windows and click on re-circulate to keep it out of the cab. I can’t stand the smell following diesel trucks either, so I do that as well.

Simply pointing out that almost all of your posts is a defense of "I have the right to argue about why do I not need it".

I have never used butt-hurt, have never even seen it before. But I do not use (or even get) "up in someone grill" and do not use "dissing". And none of my posts has needed serious redaction to avoid "moderator intervention" (at least to my memory).

Many is the newer generations cannot live without "getting in someone grill" and staying there until other people pull them off.

Perhaps you should find a trail to do the off-roading that you bought the Tacoma for. I know I bought it for access to remote roads instead of just paved roads.
