I was driving and suddenly windows and windshield all fogged up. Opened the cabin air filter and saw this. Now everytime there's snow outside there will be snow in the filter. I have appointment next week see what the dealer say. Can someone at snowy areas also check their cabin filters also?

I've had leaves and dirt/dust on my cabin air filter, but never snow...were you driving through a snowstorm with light powder? Damn, that's crazy...

Wow that sucks! There are all sorts of electrical equipment in that area, what was Toyota thinking?

I swept the snow off the truck pretty well. There were some stuck between the wipers and the hood. Somehow these residual snow got sucked inside.

Was your truck buried (covered, not literally buried) in snow? That's the only way I can see snow actually finding it's way in that deep...jesus

These pictures were taken last week, there were about 1" of snow on the windshield. And today about 2" of snow and there was much more snow in the filter but I didn't take the shot. I brushed the snow off before driving though. Now I carry an extra filter to swap it out until the dealer checks it out next week.

Good luck with it. Definitely doesn't seem right at all. Let us know what happens for sure!

The intake for that is inside the engine bay. At the back on top of the firewall is a cowling that's vented on the driver's side but covers the entire width. It comes off pretty easily. Rats, mice, younameit can find their way inside and get into the duct leading to the filter/fan box which is on the passenger side. That duct is wide open, no screen, louvers, nothing. You can take a kitchen hood filter and make something to help prefilter the larger debris and by overhanging the duct reduce or eliminate the snow as well.

How would snow get in there?

Crazy. Looks like a good candidate for a TSB retrofit of some kind.

Same way leaves and dust do, engine bay> cowling vent> intake duct> filter. Anything airborne and some that crawl can find its way, that's why there's a filter. Fine dry snow acts just like dust.

This is what's under the cowling. 2964E37F-721B-4916-A586-E4814841C654_zps_8131c6abf9163bbc78934b0038168a29b00a2c04.jpg
What you're looking at in the duct is the door that closes when you switch to recirc. When it's open the very next thing is the filter. Nothing was wrong other than your filter needs changing and nothing is broken. Keep it on recirc and the snow won't get in there, it will stay outside the duct until it melts and drains out the fenders in front of the doors.

Your profile doesn’t say anything about your truck. I do know the cowl was redesigned in 2017. I don’t know if this was the reason why...

I brush 2-10 inches of snow off my 2012 every 3-4 days and haven’t had all the windows fog up on me like that- haven’t looked at the cabin filter though in the snow, maybe mine melts before it freezes up like that?
