I need to change out the Cabin Filter in my '99 (smells like stale dust). Where is it and how do you remove/install it. Any help would be appreciated, as even my wet dog leaves a nicer scent behind!!

if its just the smell that could be a partially blocked a/c drain holding water and smelling bad. find the small drain line and put a shop vac on it to suck out the blockage, you may need to run a pipe cleaner in it a few times as you do it

not really sure if we have an interior air filter on our 99's, don't think we do

if we do im gonna pull mine and toss it out, worst stupid thing I ever saw was air filters in a car to get clogged and block airflow for a/c and heat. what does it really do anyway? you have 6" of ductwork to keep clean and its not like you have grass clippings flying around inside the truck, at least most of us don't lol.

There is alot of dust and dirt in my vents in my 1st gen. I wish i had a filter because its really dirty. Sooner or later im going to pull the front dash and clean the vents. The filters are just to keep out small particles of dust from accumulating in the vents.

I don't see it in the 1st gen DIY / How To thread, but I thought I remembered someone doing something with a 4runner in cabin air filter to retrofit 1st gens. Does anyone know anything about this, or is my memory totally wrong?

oh I understand the idea but its a truck not a car, roll up the windows in dusty areas ;)

it adds dirt to the a/c coil and heater core too but not enough to cause problems. I just have seen the filters cause a lot more problems then they solve when they aren't changed and even when changed most people don't put them in correctly so the air goes around them anyway.

as to you wishing you had a filter, look under the dash by the fan area, it will be usually have a fan guard that is an open grille to pull the air in so put regular filter medium over it and secure in place being carful so it cant be pulled into the fan and you have your air filter. it wont be perfect but it will catch about 80% of the dust.

I have seen the same. I actually didnt know my moms van had one till someone told me about it and by the time i replaced it it was pretty dirty. People think the filters are good for the life of the vehicle. More like 100,000 at best.
