    You might want to leave the cap as is, it sounds like a cheaper fix than a wiring harness.

    I have this exact issue right now. Looked around thinking there was a dead animal in the engine compartment. I could smell something bad near the washer fluid reservoir. Googled this and your post came up. I was too chicken to look in there but my husband did and confirmed there’s a dead mouse in the reservoir. We are now going to take it out and hopefully, no more terrible smell. Lucky for me, my husband has all the tools. Wish us luck. (And the cap was closed tight)
