Cable for the spare snapped

So is this why toyota switched from cable to chain for the spare tire? My cable for the spare snapped and I didn't even know.
Is this common can someone relate and how can I fix this. I lost the spare and I didn't even know it fell off.. it frayed on thr end of the cable. Is it fixable????

Did it corrode or was it cut/stolen? Not sure how common it is to lose a spare.

Cable sucks ass

 

Cables commonly rust from lack of use so you can't drop the spare when you need it. You can replace the winch mechanism but it bolts down from under the bed. If your cable was that rusted then you will have a hard time turning those bolts from the side with a wrench. You might need to remove the bed to get at them with an impact gun.
The new frames for the recall frame swap come with a chain.

 

Cable or chain, you should put a reminder on your phone's calendar to check it once a year. Usually in the spring I will lower my spare tire, clean it with soap and water, check/fill air pressure, and then lower the entire length of the chain mechanism and wipe it down with a clean but oiled cloth (also oil the "holder piece" that the wheel rests on). I also have a cable lock on my spare that I clean and re-oil at the same time so it doesn't get seized up and impossible to remove later.

Fluid film every year when i drop the spare and reapply when i pit the spare tire back under the bed for the summer. And i also put the spare in the enclosed bed for the winter, easier to get to and no laying in the snow to get to the tire.

The original Toyota's used the reliable chain setup. Later on they switched to a cable that is prone to exactly what you have now a lost spare and broken cable. They then switched back to the old reliable chain / winch.

 

Whenever I'm doing PMs and under the truck lubing things I lower the spare, check the pressure and spray the cable and winch down with motorcycle chain lube. The straw will get the lube in the housing.

 

dang I should really hit the thing with WD-40

don't wanna run it up/down again because fitting the 33 tight against the exhaust was a pain and required a second person tightening the mechanism while pushing backward on the tire
