So I downloaded a free CAD program from eMAchineshop and drew up a couple different items for my Tacoma. I am not very experienced with CAD and the files that are used, created, saved.
I am wondering if the file that I saved will be compatible with conventional CAD programs, or if there is an open source or free program that would either:
    1. work better for drawing and saving (compatibility with other systems)
    ---or---
    2. be able to open the file that I created (*.ems)

I have access through my community and some friends to 3D printers, CNC machines, and other devices to create these items, I just wasn't sure how much I need to do to the file to get it where I need it for usage.
    Thanks in advance.

The industry standard for CAD is .dwg format from AutoCad.

You can also "save as" inside of AutoCad and save it to another format output you require.
    For microstation etc.
Also there are Autodesk products that convert the files afterwards as well.

Thank you, I did see that I can convert to .dxf, .xml, .stl, .iges, .step but not DWG. My last CAD class was really just a unit in a computer programming class over 20 years ago!

.dxf and .dwg are pretty much the simplest of simplest industry standards for cad files. Mainly used for flat sheet files but I have seen otherwise.

.step is also a very widely used format but I'd stick to the initial two if possible.

.dxf will work for 2D drawings. A .stp or .step or .iges is used for 3D models, all mainstream programs can open these file types. By mainstream I mean Auto Cad, Creo, or Solidworks — these are the main programs used in industry. I believe a .stl is used for 3D printers
