Yeah the pressure fluctuations seem insane but it’s mostly designed for that. Steel is pretty resilient so long as you don’t over stress it. We have a small group that assesses penstock health and condition yearly. Your wall thickness gets ever so slightly thinner as corrosion takes its toll. The industry has seen some failures over the years. Luckily they tend to spring a small leak and not just go catastrophically. The early ‘80’s Helms incident being an exception.

I toured Helm's working on the PG&E hydro divestiture project many years ago. Pretty impressive project and the failure was epic.

I was curious and looked up the accidents at Helms. Sad, 14 men died building and repairing it. The place really sounds like Helms Deep from Middle Earth.

PG&E has several engineer positions open for hydropower engineers (civil/dams, electrical, and mechanical) up and down the state (Auberry, Auburn, Chico, Burney). All should be posted on the careers section of the pge.com website. If you have more detailed questions send me a PM. Hydro experience is nice but other similar experience (heavy civil and marine work) is good.

Work schedule is 4x10’s. Jobs are union (ESC) with a nice starting salary and 3-8% raise per year. We are bankrupt but we are good people to work with.

I run a small dive inspection team. We specialize in potable water storage systems but also do fire water and just about anything in between. We are commercial divers that are also certified coatings inspectors.

Foothill yellow-legged frog did get listed under the California Endangered Species Act this month. All clades (geographical units) of the frog are either endangered or threatened, except for the clade from north of San Francisco to Oregon along the coastal range. @nDub yours are now listed and so are mine :bananadead:

Powerhouse was drained and locked out for some other repairs. I just took the opportunity to check it out! It’s massive.

love the big vertical multi-jet Peltons! Lowest maintenance costs in Hydro, and very easy to operate assuming you have a modern governor system.

Well I've been waiting to have a reason to post in this thread for a while. Just found out 2 days ago that I've been accepted into a Hydroelectric Electrician Apprenticeship. Can not wait to start! Hydroelectric Generation and power generation in general has interested me for a long time.
