Addressing some common misnomers of the P0420 code

...and just do whatever is the minimum necessary to make it pass smog. Often the CA compliant catalytic have the same internal material as the non-CA catalytics. The only difference is the E-code on the outside that the manufacturer has to pay for with testing and approval fees to the blood suckers at CARB.

Thank you all for your advice and input. I would like to know "If my cali cats have failed, Do I need to replace them with Cali cats or can i get away with non-cali?" I do not live in Cali. I live in NH. Thanks again.

With the P420 code, check the precat, they generally go first. Mine has a Cali approved precat replacement, changed @290,000 along with both O2's. The precat was the original....the secondary cat is still the original, now with 314,000 and still going strong.

Check the precat as the culprit, it takes the hottest exhaust gases and does most of the scrubbing.

I would think that 49 state, non california cats, would be OK. What the exact difference is between CA and non-CA cats is I do not know.

    t.m.i. below
I do know that there is a difference in how a CA emmissioned vehicle warms up as compared to a 49 stater. In CA they want the cat convertor working sooner. What Toyota does to accomplish this is a combination of time it takes to enter closed loop and a leaner calibration on the PCM as well as other things. On one of my Rangers the exhaust manifolds for a CA motor have a smaller ID than the 49 stater... I assume this is to speed up the exhaust flow to the Cat when cold.

Around $300 for yours, here. Mine was around $200, that was a couple of years back and I ordered direct from them, now you have to go to a vendor that carries the brand...

Bought California unit as the truck was originally from California and installed while living in VA, then when I got back to California no problem with the visual, and still no codes, happy camper....

if you get a non carb 49 state unit, certainly a lot cheaper

I just checked, the 2.7 California Cat is around $320, a whole bunch cheaper than factory OEM by far, you could go through three of these to equal OEM costs...New York is now Carb compliant like California I believe...
