    Help :). 2001 Tacoma 2.7 4wd
I have replaced both cats once. At 370000 miles, cats no longer necessary. No DEQ reqd. What year "brain" can I replace mine with so truck will start?
C'mon Tacoma World, help a disabled vet out.

Trying to decode this. Not sure what DEQ is but it sounds like you want to remove the CATs and want to verify the truck will still run afterward.

If that is it, yeah, it'll run. It'll be obnoxiously loud, but it'll run.

There is a downstream sensor (after the CAT) but it only tells the ECU how well (or not) the CATs are functioning. It does not have anything to do with engine tuning or performance.

Thank you sir. Is your '99 a 2.7 4cylinder? Then that is control module/brain I will get at a wrecking yard.

Well, 2nd sensor tells computer it's too lean, feed more gas. My mileage down to 14mpg.

    DEQ is a emission test
No catalytic converters/O2;sensors No Engine Start. Does that narrow independent thought Sir?

Ok... plug the upstream O2 sensor into an exhaust-rich chamber (like the pre-cat pipe where it came from). The upstream tells your ECU how much fuel to inject.

Do note that without both it will error after a few minutes, then log bad data, then stop auto-correcting fuel. So over time you'll probably develop drivability problems.

If you hate cats that bad, I would at least put a straight pipe in. You'll have CELs any way, but at least it'll run properly.

I have no clue from what you've provided why it won't start though...unless you just went hacking and killed something else in the process

This is not correct. The sensor after the CATs does nothing related to engine management. Your bad MPGs are unrelated to not having any downstream sensor data.

Not sure what the thought process is here?
The truck will run just fine with no converters, you will just have a P0420 (catalyst efficiency) code.
If the truck isn't starting it's not because the converters or O2 sensors are missing (O2 sensors arent even used at startup until the exhaust is up to temp).
Now if the converter is plugged it can cause a no-start but not the lack of one being there.

It sounds like he took them both out. Which means it reverts to open loop, which is notoriously rich.

It has front cat. Rear cat hollow, spoof wired in to offset no rear converter. I want exhaust pipe, muffler and tail pipe. That's it.
I'm told that if cats/O2 sensors unplugged, the truck won't run.
That's why I'm looking at earlier brain/module for 2200RE 4cylinder. Is it necessary? Or can I just hollow front cat and un hook O2 sensors?

A different ECU isn't gona change anything, they all have catalyst monitoring since 96.
Leave the sensors hooked up at most you will have a P0420 and engine light on.
Why are you wanting to gut the converters anyway are they plugged?

Rear cat hollowed out. I replaced both years ago, too expensive to do again. Don't live in California or a state that requires DEQ. So then I need a 1995 ECU?

A 95 ECU will not run a 2001 truck(engine management and wiring is different), there's little to no performance or economy benefit to gutting them but you can run the truck with no issues other than a check engine light.
If you don't want the light on look into O2 simulators.

I don't see how you can afford these bandaid mods but not pay $100 for a cat (or two)
