I didn't imply or claim it was new. I just pointed out how fucked up it ( the law and the state ) is.

Yes I did live in the state for a few years when I was in the US Navy ( Vallejo ) back in the early 1970s. You know when the Zodiac Dude was around. No it was not me. :D

So I do have experience in living in California.

I see you are from San Diego, Sorry if you were offended my the way I feel about California, I'm just being honest about it.

    This.

As a California resident, you can import a vehicle only if it has more than 7500 miles on it.
But if you declare California your state of residence while stationed here, you can look forward to 10% sales tax on the purchase, and your annual tags will be around $300-$400 depending on the value.

Keep your residency in your home state and your truck will be registered there.

Now I've got a question. I've got a house in AZ and I work here in CA. The rule is 51% of your time makes you a resident but who's counting?
& say I worked in both states doing construction work...

    My question is
Can I go to az, switch my license over and register my truck there and spend 6 months plus one extra day and still drive in ca legally?

Looking at the DMV Site for AZ the time is 7 months. If you own property in AZ it should be no issue as long as you are willing to say that you have lived at XXX Address for 7 months.

Just don't get caught driving around with a non commercial (cheaper) license plate and no campershell. I have no idea if the police care, but they can spot the number sequence on the plate very easily.

Edit: I just read Ray's post above, and it appears the police do care!

The way I understand the 7,500 mile rule is that if you are a Cali resident and go out of state to buy a vehicle, this would apply. If you can prove that you were a legal resident of another state when you bought the truck brand new, you should be fine. Buy now, then move, no problems. Move first, then drive back to Nevada or whatever to try to save sales tax, you have problems trying to get Cali plates.

    What he said.

Also, the emissions system doesn't matter as long as it's all there. Toyota gets them certified for Cali and Federal with all the same parts. But it has to all be there. If you buy used and someone's cut the Cats off or put on an non compliant aftermarket intake, you're hosed when it comes time to smog test.

Spencer, to answer your question, no you legally are considered a resident of California if any of the following conditions are met:

    516.

Resident” means any person who manifests an intent to live or be located in this state on more than a temporary or transient basis. Presence in the state for six months or more in any 12-month period gives rise to a rebuttable presumption of residency. The following are evidence of residency for purposes of vehicle registration:
    (a) Address where registered to vote.
    (b) Location of employment or place of business.
    (c) Payment of resident tuition at a public institution of higher education.
    (d) Attendance of dependents at a primary or secondary school.
    (e) Filing a homeowner’s property tax exemption.
    (f) Renting or leasing a home for use as a residence.
    (g) Declaration of residency to obtain a license or any other privilege or benefit not ordinarily extended to a nonresident.
    (h) Possession of a California driver’s license.
    (i) Other acts, occurrences, or events that indicate presence in the state is more than temporary or transient.
    (Amended by Stats. 1991, Ch. 13, Sec. 17. Effective February 13, 1991.)

If you own/rent a place of residence on a permanent basis, which would show that your situation is not "temporary or transient" the six month or more rule would not apply. Also, CA doesn't really care where your drivers license was issued, it's the registration fees that the State cares about (but the license would get wrapped up in the case as well.)

    Agh.
    Thanks ray....
Wonder what the risk really would be of getting caught if I had both a license and plate in az & said I'm just passing through.

I guess I just need to man up and bail outta this place already. Following the bandwagon to North Dakota or Texas ASAP. Screw this place.
