Never understood Apportioned plates. Can you explain? Also, why would it be cheaper if you cross into another state?

Haters gonna hate LOL! I wouldn't worry about @Inferno, every year when I go to Utah on vacation I always hear from people who see my plates and have some comment(s) to make about our state. I listen to them then ask when the last time they got to go to the beach or go on an ocean-going boat. I'm amazed by how many people I meet who have never seen the ocean.

This. A few years ago I lived and worked in the Phoenix area (I was in the north-west portion of the valley near Surprise, Az). I got there in January and loved it! There was off-roading less than 10 minutes from where I was staying, the people I met were awesome and I spent most of my free weekends (I was there for work and didn't have a lot of free time) touring the northern-portion of the state, it was great!

Then in June I started to re-think my plans to relocate there permanently LOL!

Thanks @Kev250R. You’re correct. I may never understand the approach of hating on something that you take no ownership of or recognizing the beauty of different strokes for different folks.

If I found a place I like better than California, I would move too. I do really like Hawaii (Kauai) and we might purchase there. Although I would probably live in both California and Hawaii.

Ya know ... Back when I lived in Kalifornia in 95' ... I bought a new 3/4 ton Dodge van. It was a conversion van. All the lights, carpet, 6 captains chairs, doo-dads/bells/whistles, fancy paint, 8 speaker stereo, etc at the time.
Went to the DMV to get it registered and they wanted to charge me for commercial plates. Got into an argument with the gubbermint droid, telling her 'It's a van CONVERSION' . It's people only. There will never be loads of lumber or bags of cement hauled in this ever'. She didn't believe me. All she saw was '3/4 Ton Dodge Van'..
(The difference at the time being that commercial plates/tags were about twice as much as just passenger car tags.. Which was still insane-way-too-much ..)
So being as I had the van there, she had one of the minions go out to inspect the van. They went back and reported 'YES Mien Fuhrer! It is what the pheasant reports it as!'
So instead of paying close to $1000 for tags (Keep in mind these are 1995 dollars) I got the privilege of only paying $500...
Moved to WA. state in 2000. Have paid since then about $35.00 a year for that van.

Why don't you move now? Or years ago? Must be something you like in California that is keeping you here. :)

Except LA and Burbank is not representative of California. LA and Burbank maybe, and maybe parts of so cal......California is a big place.

Do you draw a distinction between "facts" and "opinions"?

OK, fair enough. You live in California cause you want too. Me too! :D Have a good trip, I might meet you in Roseville!!

BTW, have you ever lived in California say north of Sacramento County? I find it really different than the Bay Area or LA which occupies 99% of the news while making up a tiny minority of the state.

Edit: I have lived 50+ of my years in California and have never experienced smelly homeless people, fires, electricity outages, water shortages, or other negative things that many of you have. Not saying those things don't exist, just that isn't the California I know and love. :)
