Interesting Op-ed piece. Makes me want to throw up just a little bit. So I pay an extra $24 per year in taxes. Sure seems like there are more pressing issues to focus on than than the unfair and unjust DMV tax. How about fixing the damn state budget? Education, imigration, pollution, keeping state parks open, blah, blah, blah....

One thing that's interesting to me is that, while living in Kentucky (uber red state) for a few years, all non-cars (trucks and SUVs, etc.) were registered as commercial vehicles. Period, no ifs ands or buts

Wow good thread, this explains why my friends 2009 4-runner registration is half the cost of my 2007 tacoma. Another bs law in California.

I have contacted my Senator for District 36 and wrote him a letter explaining the unfair tax, that I was pissed, and requested that he work with Senator Ashburn to resurrect SB 422.

For those that care, you can find your Calif. State Senator using this link.

California...land of 1,000,000 fees. My friend had it even worse...they miscategorized his Tundra and, when they found out, sent him a bill for 6 years of commercial fees which had to be paid before he could register.

At least it's not a true commercial vehicle...thanks to Arnold's Global Warming bill, CARB regulations will likely result in the outlaw of all commercial diesel engines currently on the road.

He probably registered before the doubling of the License Fee was implemented last year. He'll catch up (minus the $24 truck fee) this year.

Pickups in Illinois are also registered as commercial vehicles. They also had unique plates. At least they did when I moved from there 4 years ago.

I know Texas has (or did) have a "truck" license plate. I believe there are a few more states like this.

Pennsylvania has a "truck" plate as well, mine just arrived in the mail yesterday. It cost a couple extra bucks to upgrade my registration from a car to a truck when I bought the vehicle last month. Not sure if the yearly registration is more or not (just going to assume that it is :))

All pickups in California are registered as commercial vehicles. The weight fee for my truck is $80.

The only way to get out of it is to put a shell permanently on the back of the truck. Then you can register it as a standard vehicle. The caveat is you cannot remove the shell unless you re-register it as a commercial vehicle.

You can tell by the license plate. Commerical vehicles have only one letter in the plate number (#A######) whereas standard vehicles have three letters (#AAA###). If yours has one letter, it's a commercial vehicle.

Here's the law for it in the Vehicle Code:

For those of you that did not know. Darth Vader lives at the Department of Motor Vehicles, so naturally using the dark side of the force, he wields tremendous influence over State politicians and governors.

Be happy you don't have a DC LB. We get to pay $80 each year because we're over that 4000 lbs threshold. Even the DC Short Beds only have to pay the $24.

I feel your pain. I really do.:)

We do have plates that read "TRUCK." last year my registration was a whole 68 dollars, and my inspection was somewhere around 14-16 bucks.

We pay a whole lot more but don't have to get yearly inspections.

    Just the basics
My buddy is a cop and he got his taco after I did. I had custom plates done and he thought about it but changed his mind so he can park in the loading zones. He lives in SF so parking sucks ass up there.
