Unless he just wanted to be able to run without the topper, it was unnecessary. He could have just registered it as a regular vehicle and he would have saved $80 vs. $56 since a shell is an exception to the law.

That's true, but you have to keep that topper attached at all times. And others have been getting BS from DMV that "No, we don't do that anymore."

One could always pull out the vehicle code and show them that they do still do that.

It's basically already been said but still... Damn Cali, land of a thousand fees where more money is spent on convicts than school kids!

BTW -- "mountainwolfpup" thanks for the research; good stuff

I got mine for my 2009 this week it's $498.

    Unf***ing believable.

Here is how mine broke down:

    Reg fee...................$ 56
    License Fee..............$334
    Weight fee...............$ 80
    Smog Abatement fee... $20

Well I'm not going stand still while I get shafted, I'm a fighter.

I crafted a letter to both my State senator and Assembly person educating them on this subject and demanding change, I also included the 2007 blurb from Senators Ashburn's site and a copy of my registration.

I'll post my letter as a template in another thread for the rest of you that are interested in political action.

I love California, but they can go pound sand on this one.

This was an issue at my office, as 85% of us drive Tacos. As I understand it, any truck with a bed in California is considered a "commercial vehicle" because you can "haul things with it". And if I'm not mistaken, if you have a hard cover or a shell, it is not considered commercial because it is "enclosed" and you don't have to pay the extra.

That is really too bad for him. Why are politicians so prone to making colossal blunders like that? Sheesh...

Regardless of his personal problems, and with respect to the unfair truck tax, his arguments and logic are fundamentally sound.

AB32 implications. There is a movement to suspend its implementation. Analysts are predicting that the economy will preempt the environment.

If that fails and we are taxed for our carbon output, that will be a very sad day indeed.

Hard tonneau covers don't apply. It has to be a shell.
