I have never bought a new vehicle and am wondering what the California Registration is estimated to be for a new 16 Tacoma. I tried to look up the 15 fees and registration online but the DMV wants a VIN to make the request.

Does anyone have an estimate based on any facts from the state on normal fees or from a new 15 model year?

I am trying to get a total cost of buying a new 16

About $300 for new vehicle registration. Compared to the taxes on the truck it won't be much.

Only 300? I thought it would be way more? My Sentra was almost 300 when we first bought it in 2004. Is that just a normal registration for a new car? Trucks don't cost more?

Yeah Tax is gonna suck. Tax is where you register it and not where you buy it, right?

Just add 10% to purchase price to get out the door price. Plus or minus a few hundred

AZ is like California, they base the reg off of original msrp value, goes down as the vehicle gets older. DMV has the formulation of the percentage, can't remember the actual percentage off the top of my head. Seems like a punishment for buying a new vehicle. The EPA wants us to buy newer cleaner burning more efficient vehicles, why not give us a break on registration?

Where as back in PA it is based off the vehicle's weight, which makes more logical sense, more the vehicle weighs the more damage it does to the roads. Here in Idaho it is a flat fee as well, no matter the value/age of the vehicle.

That's a good point. Lowering it makes you want to keep the vehicle rather than buy new, which keeps me driving my Sentra which is loosing average MPG. It's down to 30mpg average from tank to tank.

I have a friend who lived in Idaho. He told us about the flat fee at the DMV and how he once got his truck smogged at his own house. He found a smog shop with a mobile smog unit that drove a van around and smogged people's cars. Isn't that the life?

When I moved from PA to AZ, and registered my truck for the first time...I was like wuuuut!? :D

IIRC, I have a bud in NorCal...said his Tundra was something like $700.

    Found the AZ rules explained:

The VLT is based on an assessed value of 60% of the manufacturer's base retail price reduced by 16.25% for each year since the vehicle was first registered (15% before 8/1/98). Then, as of the Dec 1, 2000 reduction, the rate is calculated as $2.80 (new vehicles)/$2.89 (used vehicles) for each $100 of the assessed value.

For example, for a new vehicle that costs $25,000, and is registered for two years, the first year assessed value would be $15,000 and the VLT would be $420.00. The second year the assessed value would be $12,562.50 and the VLT would be $363.06. Other fees may apply when a vehicle is registered commercially.

We have been here almost a year now, I see those mobile smog vehicles everywhere.

That doesn't give explanation of how they came by each value.
