Too bad you can't do that with houses to avoid property taxes

I think my first year registration for my 2011 truck was somewhere around the $380 range. It only goes down about $20 a year after that.

Looks about right. The trucks are automatically registered as "commercial" and DMV adds on an additional $80 for weight fee. For those who has camper shells, you can re-register your trucks as a personal vehicle after a DMV inspection to remove the $80 charge.

Yes and no.. to remove the commercial classification the shell needs to be "permanently" attached to the truck and is subject to said inspection.

If it was as easy as pointing at 6 factory mounting bolts I'd go there tomorrow, but so far as I've heard - it isn't. I don't know what permanent equates to with DMV, though.

One can never have too many light bars.
All trucks in California are considered Commercial vehicles in CA. My 2013 cost 358 for 2015.

Damn that's high. I just got my registration bill for mine and it's $258 I think. Can confirm when I get to my office.

I had my 2011 registered as passenger vehicle. I asked the guy who inspected it and he said it's not common to get it inspected because he feels a lot of people don't know about getting it re-registered. Mine was clamp bolted on but he put "riveted" on the form.

If you're interested in a shell, do what I did (read my posts above). Only way to lessen the registration. My sister lives in OR and she was telling me their registration is something like $35 yearly.

I'd skip the shell if you're not interested in having it as it will cost you more money. TX is a truck state though I don't know how much registration is over there.
