If I were doing it, I would remove the hub & bearing, remove the knuckle, anchor the knuckle to the drill press table with bolts in the T slots, align the hole with a pointed center, drill it out, put the pointed center back in the chuck, start the tap in the hole with the pointed center in the end of the tap, and turn the tap with a wrench. Of coarse, if you have access to a milling machine, that would be even better.

FYI most ACE Hardware stock metrics up in 8.8 (like an SAE grade 5) and some 10.9 (like an SAE grade 8) hardness in many lengths and pitches. Lots of M6, 8, 10, 12, 14 sizes and saw pitches in 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, and 1.75, with even some 2.00 so a good weekend place for those jams we get into. I often go there for my Tacoma and boat. Have stainless too in 2 grades. No I do not work there.

No drill press available. Made due with a C Clamp and the 31/64 drill bit. Was patient working the tap into the ear on the steering knuckle. Ended up going in straight. Everything bolted in as expected.

    $80 for the helicoil kit
$15 for the 31/64 drill bit

Tuition paid regarding the judicious use of air tools.

It looks like you did a great job with the heli-coil. [IMG]
