Will be morphing it into my semi retired work truck
For those in the rust belt when does the slide pin start needing lube . Truck on the road almost a year now , just installed snow tires today . Thought after I should have done those pins while the tires were off .

Used to enclosed slide pins so had to search the forum about them but no one seems to start lube until they look crusty .

    Thanks
    First snow today also

I use anti seize on the contact points,

Best thing you can do is wash the truck with a wand and blast the brakes

Hey bishop since you’re a dealer tech is a little bit of a rough idle common on these trucks?

Yup, you get used to it. D4S means no carbon on the valves. So its doing its job with its crazy idle.

Okay good to know. My new 23 tacoma v6 has a pretty good rough idle. Only 500 miles. It does it most the time but sometimes it’s smooth. Rpm’s never fluctuate in just feel it in the seat and the steering wheel

I remove, de-rust and lube the pins every time I have the wheels off. I clean them up with a wire wheel on a bench grinder. I got a set of wire bottle brushes from Harbor Freight to clean out the holes in the calipers. Synthetic brake caliper lube seems to work the best for lube.

I learned my lesson the hard way on my first gen. truck. A simple pad replacement turned into a major project due to stuck pins.

Hey there from the salty Adirondacks,
It definitely doesn't hurt to lube them but the what really works the best for easy maintenance and little cost is replace them every tire rotation. I've done this on all my Tacoma's. You also wanna make sure the pads are not seized in the calipers. I service my PRO (oil, filter and cross rotation every 6000 miles. That's my personal preference.

Tacoma's and 4runners are known for brake pad skipping (Front Brakes) after the pins get corroded.

You are better off to keep the front pins dry and just replace them when it happens.

When you lube them, they then collect dirt on the pins and the dirt can build up and prevent the pads from sliding back and forth on the pin.
