I feel like the calipers are designed very poorly on the first gen. ESPECIALLY in the salt belt. Most of my guide pins were completely seized and I was able to cut some of them out but ultimately I have to replace the calipers because they are so rusted on. I tried everything, liquid wrench, atf acetone mix, heat, and hammers. Even tried drilling them out without any luck. And of course autozone had their calipers packaged wrong and gave me two passenger side ones :/

Anyways, anyone else have these problems/concerns?

I think it's just the salt belt plus lack of maintenance (they may be the original brakes from 03). When you replace them, spray some POR15 or fluid film on them regularly and it should prevent it from doing it next time.

I mean, they lasted since 2003. About time to replace them. Mine are still rust free, but of course, I don't have salt issues.

And the autozone ones are going to be worse as far as rust. Swapped some autzone ones on another first gen and rust formed within a week. By 3 months they were orange. They also had an incorrect casting on one side that I had to return, and the other side the casting was split and leaked fluid. Long story short, OEM parts only for brakes. Autzone is Chinese garbage

    Its the salt belts issue.

Do you guys do Tundra brake upgrades on the 1st gens like we do to our 3rd gen 4runners?

Can't speak for the first gens, but I have replaced all 4 calipers on my 03 runner

Around here is it kinda common to change calipers lol of course OEM are pricy but they are better. I was more an aftermarket guy for my other vehicule but now I consider more oem for the truck

But why did toyota choose the guide pin design over the "flip up" caliper design that seems to be more popular.

When I assemble, I always coat the guide pins with anti-seize compound. It will save your bacon years down the road.

    Pretty much stock right now
I had to return the last advance auto caliper I bought because after installing it leaked like a sieve. They must sell a ton of junk because the counter guy didn't even blink or ask a question. I should've rebuilt the OEMs, but they were pretty rusty.

I can change both my front brakes in under 30 minutes. The design is so easy. I also live in CA where there's zero rust on my truck.

I also use "caliper lube" type on the outside edge of the pads to keep them from sticking once installed.
