Sadly I didn't have the time to find tundra calipers or do the research, maybe another time.

It's not always as easy as just bolting on new calipers. I've read about plenty of people needing to either modify the Tundra calipers or get wheel spacers or other mods when running the stock 16" wheels.

ive broken a caliper trying to hammer out a siezed pin. and ive had to cut off a caliper due to a snapped/siezed bolt. salt/rust sucks. thats why i now religiously put antisieze on anything i take apart now.

You gotta modify the banjo bolt hole as well.

I've heard the stock wheels should fit no problem. For myself I won't have stock wheels by the time I upgrade the brakes which opens a new can of worms. I'm aiming for moving the tires outboard to clear my tires butter so I "should" have more room to make them fit. No way am I running spacers though.

    Agree, spacers suck.

The more I talk about it, though, the more I wonder if what I'm remembering is an issue with putting 15" wheels on the Tacos, and people filing down teh stock caliper to fit 15's. I briefly considered that since non-metric tires are generally a bit cheaper, but never went that route because it would 100% prevent doing the Tundra brakes.

you are correct. the 15" Toyota wheel are too small for the 231mm calipers. The 16" Toyota wheels (maybe not the tri-star) were also on the Tundra up until '06 when it changed. The OffRoad editions still came with a 16" wheel, but it was just a standard 5-star. the 17" wheels were added as a visual upgrade and to give extra space for the calipers.

Plenty of guys run spacers including me in the past. No different than using wheels with less backspacing. Sometimes you have to use them for getting track widths to match up etc and they perform without issue. Do they make things a little more difficult on suspension and bearings? Sure. But no different than backspacing. Using high quality ones with common sense will be all good.

I have yet to see a scientific study showing the effects of backspacing and its effects on wheel bearings and such besides scrub radius so when people saying that they're making things way harder on wheel bearings I have a hard time understanding what they have for information to be making this judgement.

No reason to indiscriminately bash them. Don't like'm? Got it. Saying they suck? That is excessive.

Meh, I don't disagree. Increased leverage on drivetrain bits doesn't care if it comes from wheel off set or spacers.

Slip on spacers are one thing as long as longer studs are used etc. depending of slop on spacer width of course.

Bolt on spacers are fine too. For me, Id rather stick with my one set of lugs nuts per wheel rather than 2 sets of lug nuts per wheel.

Additionally spacers make no sense for me because my stock wheels are super beat up from rocks. I want to replace them with a more off road capable wheel. Why not get a wheel with better off set for my needs rather than stock off set plus spacers?

If someone have to go lower than 3.5" backspacing they'll need spacers since that's as far as most wheels on our trucks go. Anyway not applicable to OP's thread so I should keep my end of the debate succinct. BTW your double fuel tank idea is a great one.

had an 08 4runner that the front brakes started to drag...took the wheel off and both caliper pistons were rusted and the guide pins were severely corroded...

I wonder if stainless guide pins would make a difference?

That's what I was thinking, do they make them anywhere ? Can someone here make them?
