Went hiking yesterday morning. The forecast called for early storms and the clouds didn't disappoint!

From my 18th trip from L.A. to Monterey in the last two years. I love going through these little towns south of Salinas and seeing what's there. I've been wanting to shoot this literally for decades and either the light sucked or the weather did and this day it was just the weather. Never even shut off the truck as it was 106F out that day and wanted to keep the AC going. Never bothered with a tripod either. Hand held with a Canon 24mm tilt-shift using the in viewfinder electronic level to at least get it close enough to fix in Photoshop. There's too much Photoshop post production to detail here other than L*a*b Color Mode definitely came into play. ShadyRestMotel_246A4208_v6.jpg

On a month long road trip, kicking myself for not bringing camera gear. Pixel will have to do...

It's all lighting and composition anyway right?

I went to Southern Portugal for two weeks. Packed all my camera gear planning to take some cool shots as the they have some awesome seaside caves and cliffs there. Realized when I landed that I leftmy batteries on the charger at home. FML. Too cheap to spend 100+ euro on another battery and charger. Especially since I have an extra charger purchased in Alaska when I forgot to pack that. I suck at packing. I need a butler.

A few years back I took a little motorcycle ride to Laughlin Nevada. While there I decided to go see the Hoover Dam and the new bridge they had built.

Needless to say, I'm standing on the bridge at this point.

If you look down at the base of the dam, you can see some maintenance vehicles near the water in the lower center.

    Here's one of those vehicles...

A big reason why I like to travel with my old trusty Olympus XA 35mm film camera is there are no batteries to remember and no memory cards to lose. It's also pocketable and lets me stay in the moment. I usually average 1-2 rolls per day, so if its stolen I'm only out a days worth of photos and if it breaks I'm just out the remainder of the day as I have a backup XA2. 10 rolls of Ektar 100 or Portra 400 plus a couple rolls of Ilford HP5 (or whatever their C41 black and white film is called) and I'm set.

I've tried other larger old school cameras like a Yashica 35GSN and a really nice Olympus 35RD, but they're too bulky. From the same bridge, Fuji Provia 100F and the Yashica.

Dwayne’s Photo in Parson Kansas is the cheapest place I’ve found to get film developed. Throw all 20 rolls in a padded flat rate envelope and send it out!

I last used Dwayne's at the end of 2011, sending the last twenty rolls of Kodachrome to them as they were the last K-14 lab in the world. They're fine for E6 and C41 but I probably wouldn't use their scans. Even shot people on Kodachrome sometimes. How I miss that film. Here's Joe Zawinul from Weather Report shot on Kodachrome 25 (PKM) scanned on my Howtek 8000 drum scanner.Zawinul_4.jpg

Oh I have other labs I prefer, namely the FIND Lab in utah and the Darkroom in California, but Dwayne’s is the most economical.
