Well when I look at my vin on my Toyota account, they call it a 1996. I’ve always gotten parts calling it a 96. But anyway, the manual says 2wd models 15.1gal, 4wd 18gal.
However, my gas tank is also 1.5 inches down like yours from the frame.......:boom:

Im gonna let my gas tank go until the point where I know it’s close to running out(from experience) and I’ll confirm the amount. But I Also know I have my ultragauge set to give me a warning when I’ve used 16 gals of gas.. so I’m pretty certain mine is 18 gals and 1.5 inches down.65E1089D-1C8C-4702-B5DB-B5F79F4721A2.jpg

I bet yours is 15 gallons with it hanging 1.5” down.

The ultragauge I bet is not totally correct,
My scanguage will tell me I’m getting 25 mpg
    when I’m getting 20-22 mpg.
What’s the most you have ever filled up Into the tank?

Looks like the manual says 18 gallons and I know mine is a 15 gallon tank, so looks like there were both available then.

Maybe the autos got a 18 gallon tank?

So did they use the same 15 gallon gas guage, and a different sending unit on the 18 gallon tank? The 18 gallon tank would need a 1.5” longer fuel pickup line.
And that’s why a few people are saying the most they have put in is 15-16 gallons in a 18 gallon tank?

    Well, I’m just confused.
It looks like in that screen shot 4 wheel drive It’s 68 liters of gas, 18 gallons, 15 imperial gallons.
I didn’t know imperial gallons were a thing.
I’m gonna let my tank go down and see how much I can get in there.

I’m guessing there are 18 gallons and 15 gallons tanks from the responses here that were available

Imperial gallons are a British measurement, before they went to the metric system. If you ever work on a classic British car, the measurements are in inches, and you can use SAE wrenches on them. However, the threads are Whitworth, not SAE.

So... I cant speak to what your truck came with for sure but it looks by the depth of the tank in the pics you posted it looks like a 15 gallon tank. The 15 and 18 gallon tank are the same except the bottom is deeper on the 18 a few inches. The flat pick up and pump unit are also longer on the 18 gallon. You can 100% swap them out on both 5lug and 6lug regular cab and extra cab. And this is plug and play no mods needed. I had a 15 gallon on my truck when it was a 5 lug and swapped in the 18 gallon then when I did the 6lug frame swap I used the 18 gallon. and am still running it. Here is 2 pictures of the front gas cross member it is the same on 5 and 6 lugs and a picture of a 18 gallon and 15 gallon tank side by side. Not the best pic but only one I can find. I do have a side shot of the 2 together Ill look for it when I get home tonight. Also have 2 18 gallon tanks for 1995.5 to 2000 for sale.

Did you do this on a regular cab? Reg cabs have 2 tank straps and I would assume you need a longer strap, at least on the front, to accommodate the taller/deeper 18gal.

    I could be wrong.

Yes on a regular cab. the 18 gallon tank was off a extra cab. The regular cab uses 2 straps and yes the gallon strap is longer. The extra cab uses only 1 strap and the front bolts to the carrier bearing crossmember.

So not quite a mod but you do need more parts than just the tank and fuel sending unit.

    Thank you for the information!

Well I’ll be dammed! I guess it’s been awhile since I’ve let my tank go empty to fill it all the way up. But I let it go to here8108A20A-C4FB-4E55-B95C-7D3E2430DA58.jpgFilled up all the way to here8E672B9C-4535-48FA-A022-ED2800B50D98.jpgit seems as though I sure was wrong!

It does say 1996. So I guess I was right originally.... idk that’s always confused me. But it looks like 10/95 is past the cut off date for 1995.5s?
