18 gal tanks and 15 gal tanks can be swapped for one another. Both tanks are the same shape and dimensions, but 18 gal tanks are a bit deeper. They bolt identical, but the strap for the 15gal is shorter, so you will need to lenghten it if you want to upgrade to an 18 gal tank and shorten it if you want to downgrade to a 15 gal tank

All components are identical except the bracket for the fuel pump and sending unit (longer on 18 gal and shorter on 15 gal)

BUT despite being the same shape and size, 01-04 tanks wont fit on 95-00 and vice versa because the EVAP system on 01-04 is mounted on the tank while 95-00 EVAP is in the engine bay

Here is the comparison between 18 gal and 15 gal tanks:

I hope this helps! i have done the swap on someone's truck before, so that's how I know :p

My last fill up yesterday and I got 320 miles from my 15 gallon tank,
Man would I be happy to be able to push close to 400 miles per tank,
Going to definitely have to do this mod, IF I can find time before winter,
    If not definitely spring time.

Have to get frame brackets and a new shock mount welded 1st.
    Thanks for that info.

It's hard to see any difference between the 15 and 18 from the top. I than removed the front 4 most bolts and loosened the back 2 bolts then tilted the bed up.

    OME and worth every penny.
That IS a jump. Hmm. Maybe the 'some are thirsty' attitude i have is that 'some have a bit leaky injectors'.

edit: They were replaced by PO right before I bought it. The guy was having a fit about gas mileage.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
You can also tell by the emissions system what model year yours is. 95.5 (I had one) has no tank pressure sensor and a single round charcoal can. The 96 has a tank pressure sensor and a larger black charcoal box

with it being a bit deeper, will he have issues re-installing the fuel shield plate underneath exactly how it was or have to mod it?

drop the tank and re-install quoted at roughly $277 here
looks as though the filler neck needs to be undone to drop it from under?!?

I’ve dropped my tank before to do the fuel pump, I used to have a headache rack and bed box full of tools at one point and it seemed easier to drop the tank than to get everything out of the bed and remove the bed.
I do not recall having to remove the filler neck though.

so the fuel tank would be removed completely out of the way with the neck still attached?

The filler neck is sorta just stuffed up there, I've pulled the bed a couple of times and as long as you take off the gas cap, it just pops out.

Or you can forget the gas cap and break the gas cap.:anonymous:

Yes no reason to remove the filler neck. Just take the cap off. Also if you remove the filler neck trim off the bed it gives you more room to move the neck around. Only thing is the little screws like to brake pretty easy if your not careful.

from john's picture it just looks like the neck goes over the top of the frame rail a bit far for the tank to drop straight down (neck still attached) with no issues and no need to tilt the tank awkwardly to wiggle it out without taking the whole thing apart :notsure:

Yes but there is a 12mill bolt holding the neck to the bed mount on the frame. You need to be able to get to it and remove it or when you drop the tank down it will be hanging by the neck off the frame. You can also get to it easier but removing the wheel well plastic trim.

If my memory serves me correctly, I do not remember having to take off the neck to get my tank down to get the fuel pump in. I’m pretty sure there are some bolts that hold the neck in place that needed to be removed. This has also been over 3 years ago since I did that. Full disclosure, I could just be forgetting.

yes, i have located the bolt holding the neck that @Tour991 speaks of
i've spent an ample amount of time over the past month cramped underneath staring at stuff!
