ah, that's interesting. Yeah, that means they made the change somewhere in 2001 then

just curious, what is the production date of your truck?

Even more interesting is that I just took a look at 2001 fuel tanks and they are slightly different than 95-00, more towards 02-04 tanks, but not yet like them. They have the connection point template for the fuel tank mounted EVAP, but is is not cut out. They use the same filler necks than 02-04. They still have the same shape and overall dimensions the but only thing is that the top of 01-04 tanks have a bump while 95-00 is flat.

    95-00 no EVAP flat top

So, a 01 tank may work on a 95-00 and will require the 02-04 filler neck. But its the top bump that makes me wonder... We should look at where it bolts to the crossmember to see if it is identical and at the same place than 95-00

the fuel tank skidplate bolts to the fuel tank strap. So no, it will not cause issues

Though 2wd (15 gal) tank straps don't have the little ''blocks'' onto which the skidplate bolts to. So if you got a 15 gal (2wd) tank strap, you will need to weld some on if you want to put your skidplate back

Yeah so I'm pretty sure the later first gens (maybe late 01 to 04?) had an 18.5 gallon tank. Manual and everything mentions it. I've filled my tank up more than 15 gallons like some people with 18 gallons have said.

no, 2wd trucks (except Prerunner) still had the smaller tank (upgraded to 16 gal), according to the owners manual and parts stores. And you can see that 2wd tanks are still shallower thant 4x4 fuel tanks

I was talking about 4WDs and PreRunners. I see a lot of debate on here that all trucks without a 15/16 gallon tank had an 18 gallon tank. I'm just mentioning that our fuel capacity seems to have bumped up for the 4WD/Prerunners half a gallon later in production.

ah yes, well, they indeed upgraded to 18.5 gallons in 2001
I guess it is the top bump that allows for this extra 0.5 gallon ?

Just went and filled up. The gas gauge was below empty. Almost to the point of me getting nervous. I know for a fact I have a 18 gallon tank and I filled it all the way up to the top of the filler neck. Got just under 15 gallons.

Maybe you have a 15 gallon sender unit instead of a 18 gallon sender?
Or the level arm is bent giving you a faulty reading?
That’s how much I put in my 15 gallon tank is 14.5 gallons When or if I test my gauge

I think it's just my guage. It goes way over full as you can see in the picture. I know the sender unit is correct when they are out of the tank and side by side they are easy to see the difference. I think I may just run it dry some time with a gallon tank in the bed just to see what milage I get.

Careful, running dry can kill the fuel pump. Not worth the risk for this experiment if you ask me.

I need to swap my tank soon, so I’ll measure tank depth vs fuel strainer and see what the difference is, then add a few gallons water and see how deep it is in the tank.

my guess is that the intake on the fuel pump is 1-1.5” off the bottom of the tank, so the last few gallons are not accessible. Also why the gauge reads empty when there is some fuel left.

It sure can! That’s what caused my last pump to die, ran out of gas.

i was carrying a spare gallon in the bed because of the remoteness of my travels that day

I did I had a $1.00 off per gallon with the Safeway rewords deal. Costco is still cheaper but not driving a half hour to just for gas
