Go ahead and try relocating the ground and turning the gain down. that may work for awhile. If you want to really pound your subs buy the cap and that will help equalize the electrical load throughout the truck, i.e. headlights as well as other illuminated objects wont pulse every time it hits.

Your best bet is to upgrade your amp brother, or possibly finding a new place to locate it so it has better "breathing" capabilities. Most good amps have overheating protection which will shut it down to prevent any further damage, DO NOT try and cheat that by upping the fuse(s) in the amp either or it will fry(been there done that). I've dealt with this issue in the past and the only thing that fixed it was getting a better amp, but when you do that you start blowing subs and the money pit gets deeper!

he could easily have his gains to high making his subs clip. to me, thats what it sounds like its doing. and a cap wont fix that. also, just having a better ground is just a good idea, regardless of the situation.

having a shitty amp could be a culprit of his problem and guess what, a cap aint going to fix that either.

a cap is generally a band aid for problems. which can be fixed with a better alternator, batter (or even a second battery) and better wiring.

j0ej0e, what kind of amp do u have?

    where is the "like" button?!

It could also be an issue on how many subs he is running and how they are hooked up that could be causing the overheating

from what I can tell from this picture of your amp, is if you are running 2 of those 12" W6V2's and only have 1 cable set(positive and negative) running from your sub box into the right side of the amp where you hook them up, then you are asking the amp to push a whole lot of power to those monster subs which would cause it to automatically turn off to cool down. Now if you were to wire one sub's +&- wires to one amp hook up and the other sub to the 2nd +&- amp hook up you should be fine. Better to have less total power running to each sub for sound quality and amp longevity IMHO.

If you really want to go balls deep, buy another one of those JL audio amps and bridge them together and have one amp per sub!

*to anybody else reading this, if I'm way off with this let me know please. I'm by no means an expert, just a been there done that kind of thing.

i think u might be off a little. he has dvc subs. which means if they are 4 ohm DVC then u will get either 2 or 8 ohms out of one sub. depending on if u wire that sub up in paralel or in series. with both subs he could have 1 ohm, 4 ohm, or some other combination. anyways thats the theory kinda

here is a mono amp runnin to subs. the subs are in parallel to each other, but the DVC's are wired in series. this is a 4ohm setup
    [IMG]

here is a mono amp runnin two subs. the subs are in parallel to each other and the DVC's are wire in parallel also. this is a 1ohm setup
    [IMG]

now if u had a mono amp, runnin two subs, with the subs in series to each other, but the dvc's in parallel, u will have a 2 ohm setup. i dont have the diagram for this, but not sure if its totally possible either

yup, when you start using big words like ohms, you lose me lol. My vote goes to dropping the extra $500 for another JL Audio 500/1 amp, bridge them together 1 amp per sub and blow your windows out, or women's clothes off, or turn your brain to mush, whichever he prefers

heres the real question... if i have 2 old SPL subs that i have no idea of their impedance how do i wire them up in my friends car?

uh, do whatever u can to find impedence and where they are SVC or DVC? it isnt on the magnet? personally, i bet they are 4 ohm svc. in that case, put them in parallel to get a 2ohm load if ur amp can handle 2ohm.

DVC. This should help the amp that they were originally wire to is a 4 ohm 4 channel amp. it was bridged to 2 channels to each sub.

+/- to one sub and the other +/- to the other...god knows what's going on in the box...but them is not hooked together as the box is sealed in between. Should be 250 to each sub :notsure: Been like that for years....
