Depends which one is stamped on the side of your barrel....if your weapon is chambered for 5.56 then shooting that one would be best and vica versa...there are slight differences in the shape of the shell in the throat area....in fact, if I remember my facts right, if your weapon has .223 on the barrel it is recommended that you DON"T shoot 5.56.....

556 stamped barrel can shoot both just fine. .223 stamped barrel should only shoot .223 and not 556.

the 6.8 barrel is similar in that a 6.8 sammi barrel should only shoot factory 6.8 loads. while a 6.8 SPC II stamped barrel can shoot any load

Its a 556 nato 1/8, seems the 556 is a faster round... Dont have to worry about the 556 in the 223 barrel. Dont know why no one gives an answer on shootin 556 tho. Lookin at 1000 rd boxes

Using commercial .223 Remington cartridges in a 5.56 mm NATO chambered rifle should work reliably, but generally will not be as accurate as when fired from a .223 Remington chambered gun due to the longer leade.[19] Using 5.56 mm NATO mil-spec cartridges (such as the M855) in a .223 Remington chambered rifle can lead to excessive wear and stress on the rifle and even be unsafe, and SAAMI recommends against the practice.[20][21] Some commercial rifles marked as ".223 Remington" are in fact suited for 5.56 mm NATO, such as many commercial AR-15 variants and the Ruger Mini-14 (marked ".223 cal"), but the manufacturer should always be consulted to verify that this is acceptable before attempting it, and signs of excessive pressure (such as flattening or gas staining of the primers) should be looked for in the initial testing with 5.56 mm NATO ammunition.

that means to me, if i shoot a 556 in a 556, it will be more accurate than a .223 round shot in a 556chamber
