Is this a ''run from' vehicle or are there specific problems to know about?

We love our Crosstrek, 70 K miles, no problem so far
Had a Forester, rust killed it at 180,000. Undercarriage rotted.

Sold my ‘09 Forester about 1 yr ago, great car but my local garage (fair and honest, work on all of our cars) hit me with an estimate for repairs that was greater than my asking price…timing, head gaskets, carrier bearings, wheel bearings, etc. All items that I expect to have to address but they all hit at once. Too bad, fun little car to drive and tenacious AWD systems get Scoobies anywhere their ground clearance will allow.
Probably a result of deferred maintenance by the previous owner and exacerbated by Northeast Rust and my “bat out of hell” driving style in it. If it was not my Daily Driver I probably would have tackled the repairs myself. I will also note that it sold within about 10 min of posting at the below price.

 

We have a Forester for the wife. It’s a great vehicle that’s cake to drive in all conditions. I still prefer the Tacoma personally haha, I’m sure all of us would. Got it new, it’s a ‘22 with 28k and no serious issues to report. Other than weather trim around the wheel wells falling out. Supposedly it’s under warranty but I haven’t taken it in yet. Probably will this month

 

Wife is on her second forester both have been good or better than my tacomas in my opinion.
Both were undercoated new.
Her 2008 had 160k and is still around we sold it 2-3 yrs ago.
Timing belt and brakes biggest expenses.
Very little rust underneath wheel wells had some rust.

We had some hail over here last year that totaled out quite a few vehicles at local dealerships. Thankfully nothing too bad where my house is and the vehicles were in the garage

 

Love Subies!y moms Ascent has 72k miles on it with very little issues. Its an absolute beast in any weather!

 

2005? Chances are the head gaskets have already been done. However body rot and rotten sb frames are common.

 

2005 was in the era when the Outback engines had head gasket issues due to the water jacket design. If I were you I'd do a little research on the overall issue, as well as the individual car's repair history.

I have a 2014 OB, which was the subsequent era and it is a great car aside from slight oil consumption (1 qt every 3500-4000 miles). Unbelievable car to have in bad weather.
