Cam wheel sensor wire exposed

I'm doing the timing belt replacement and found an exposed wire that goes to my cam wheel sensor. It appears to be a ground wire (black) Everything works fine on the truck. Something that was done by previous owner at some point it appears. Should I be concerned?

That's a shielded loom. So Rfi doesn't make haywire with any circuits.
Came from the factory that way.

 

Okay thanks. It looked like the exposed wire might have been connected to the plastic clip that is mangled (pictured in blue circle) Also what does Rfi mean?

 

Electricalmagnetic interference or radio frequency interference. Rfi.

You'll find them on any delicate circuits in your wiring harness. SRS, ABS etc.

 

I can't really tell on my phone... It looks like your connector is just mangled?

The sheilding may or may not be connected to ground. If your connector/plug doesn't have a metal building, then it was never connected.

Ive dissected an entire 04 wiring harness and your connector looks just mangled.

Would the wire from the ECU to the knock sensor harness have the same kind of shielding? I have the P0325 and was starting to repair it and some other things and I came across this in the wiring harness. Does this look normal? Looked pretty crappy to have come from the factory.

 

I believe the knock sensor's sheilded. I'm on my phone so the pic is grainy. But I seriously doubt that left the factory that way.
Is the wire cooked or did the sheathing come off?

 

The sheathing on the blue w/ yellow wire is stripped back probably 3” shorter than the blue wire. Blue wire has bare wire neatly twisted along side like you would expect. The blue-yellow bare wire is crimped to the brown ground wire coming from the connector. It’s poorly twisted and had the worst shrink sleeve over. I’ll post another pic of how I found it after taking off poorly applied black electrical tape.

 

Yeah, I think someone's been under the hood treading where they shouldn't be treading (electrically).

Im not sure what's going on there.

 

The black wire is sensor 1 and the gray wire is sensor 2. The brown wire is the sensor ground. If the bare wire is shielding, that’s where my problem is. There’s no other wire to splice the brown ground wire to. I have the ECU pinout and I can see where the gray and black wires connect to the ECU. I guess I’m going to have to try to find the wires with the sheathing still on them somewhere inside the dash or right outside the firewall. It is common to have the shielding twisted up and taped off on the end correct? So if I can find that on the other end then I would know it’s shielding and I would just have to run the ground wire somewhere. I still have to get under the intake and check the sensors themselves and replace the harness there. I just don’t want to put it back together and still have the same code. I appreciate the help!

 

Looks like the shielding from both wires splice to the brown ground wire from the connector. I’ll retire this weekend and try to get it back together. Thanks for the help
