Camburg UCA's Hitting Coils on Ext Travel Coilovers??

    Hey guys, spoke with Scott at Camburg to confirm a couple things.......

    I basically wanted to confirm that the ball joint UCA's I have from them will work with an ext travel coilover like Icon. Wanted to see that they'd provide the same amount of droop as their uniball and if so, would they hit the coils like the 1.25" uniballs do?

    "With our ball-joint upper arms since we change the angle of the ball-joint, it allows for more travel using extended length coilovers without any kind of binding. With those coilovers you will get the same amount of wheel travel ball-joint vs uniball. It's rare for our 1.25" uniball uppers arms to just touch the coils on droop. Many variables contribute to that situation, what coilover, alignment specs, other parts installed, and the actual truck. You'd be surprised how different two trucks of the same year can be."

    He then went on to say he was unaware of their uca's hitting the coils of Icons or anyother brand, yet I'm pretty sure this has been happening for a while now!

    He said their coilovers will pull 10.5-11" of travel with out hitting the uca....is this safe for a 4x4? Would the Icon's at 9.5-10" travel be better?

    Thoughts?

    The camburg 1.25 can and probably will hit. Out of 3 trucks I've known with those uppers 2 hit the coilovers

    That's what I thought.....I knew Cliff's touched and he had that combo at one point. So the bj's allow as much droop, they'll hit?!?!

    Uhm I think it's the size being a 1.25" that causes them to hit...but I could be wrong! Lol

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    Correct. The 1.25's hit the coils, unless the coils are turned "just right". 1" and BJ UCA's dont hit the coils.

    Ok, that makes sense! What's up with burg coilovers pulling 10.5-11" of travel? Crazy!

    Ask Camburg if their balljoint UCAs use the same bearing cup as their 1.25" uniball UCAs. If the balljoint bearing cup is smaller, it won't hit the spring.

    I would try and rotate the spring. I remember I had a coil touching problem with my coils although they are different. Toyota recommends that the spring perch be oriented so the bottom part of the coil starts in the back left pointing direction for both sides. Meaning the start of the coil be @ 7-8 o'clock based on the truck's orientation. I then corrected it and no touching. This might obviously only apply to stock coils, but the principle of why it is done might be the same.

    Can you rotate the spring on the ext travel CO when off? that might just move the coil enough to leave the void in the coil when it reaches the position where it hits...

    Rotating the spring 90 deg won't affect ride height by a noticeable amount. The thread pitch on the shock body is too fine for that.

    Said the cup was a little smaller but the TC 1" does it too! That's just stoopid and could cause a gash in the spring! Guess strapping it would work but seems stoopid too!

    1" TC shouldn't for most people. My All-Pro 1.25" doesn't touch the Icon ET coil, either. I think the condition is more prevalent with the Camburg 1.25" UCA because of its specific geometry (amount of caster, degree of uniball "tilt", etc.).

    Strapping is a good idea on any suspension if its going to go full droop frequently. You should not be resting the weight of your suspension on ball joints, uniballs, and/or shocks
