A few months ago I had an old man ask me, Do you need it?... That has been suck in my head ever since and I had to live in a big town for a month and it really hit me, Do I need all the bells and whistles on my truck?
Tonight was first time I got to go out on a gravel road after city driving and Thank god for Tacomas! Tomorrow I'm gonna remove all the stupid chrome shit on my truck and do a tune up(plugs, synthetic oil, and OEM oil filter). So in other words, my truck is only going to be under this rule: Function>Form.

Anyone else ask themselves "Do I need this?" Before any purchase?

Well I don't know about wiser, I just can't understand why I even have the toys that I do... gonna start selling off my teenage toys like paintball guns and guns to afford tools and tuition. Definitely noticed my driving habits increased in safety since being in town, before it was drive like how I want to drive, not paying attention to other drivers and showing off at stop signs lol... what's the point of that?

Sometimes in life you have to get the things you want, however illogical they may seem. If they make you happy, then they have a purpose.

I fully agree with your post below though:

Was this "old" man 40? Just asking because the old men that I know are in their 70s and love the chrome. I swear my 75 year old neighbor down the road bought that chrome door edging and stick on crap by the mile. He was kind to his Mark LT but has been ruthless to his Accord coupe and his new F150.

I grew up with that saying being drilled into my head. As time moves on, i succumb to the "want" less and less.

A sign of maturity. The next step is realizing how much extra it costs to buy things on time instead of saving up to pay cash. However, if everyone felt that way, our economy would probably be in worse shape than it is.

I completely agree! I "want" a lot but i need very little. I need to take care of my things and get the most out of them. I'm tired of trying to keep up with everyone's purchases and just enjoy what i have in life, which is poetry good imho! Great thread!

That old man was in his 60's and was telling me how he lived a cash only lifestyle and now has a million in retirement... the guy I bought my truck from had an obsession with chrome. I just watched that "Project X" movie, a I feel stupider, yes stupider! It did have some good chicks though, but in the end the most important part was that one girl... it always ends with a one special girl! Lol... Anyways I just changed my spark plugs in like 45 minutes and they had 115k on them!!!!!!! I have only had it for 2k

    I don't have much I don't need. I offroad a lot.

Lockers are next, then beadlocks. Do I need those? Probably not. I like to able to do difficult lines.
