Hi there everyone, i got my tailgate changed by the dealership for an aftermarket one about a year ago. They reinstalled the original backup camera. Unfortunately, they were not able to make the camera work afterwards... the display goes to the rearview mirror. There is a signal since when i put the truck to backup, the screen becomes blue then turns black. I think it’s probably a connection problem more than a camera or display problem since the camera was working great before the tail gate change. I wanted to know your thoughts about how i should handle the problem. I kind of miss the backup camera especially for hitching on a trailer.
    Thank you!

What did the dealer say? Sounds like incompetent- incomplete work. Regardless:

Do you know anybody with a Tacoma & tale gate the same as yours. Swapping the tale gate is simple enough. The camera is just a plug. If the camera works after the tail gate swap, then You know it’s something in your tailgate/camera. Not something in the truck.

My truck is at the dealership right now for the frame change. It will be ready next monday or tuesaday. I will ask him again what his impressions are with that. If he could check his work, even though it’s been a little while. I got it replaced while it was getting the rear suspension changed for recall. I had it changed there since it was just a timing issue. I had it ready with me. I will tell him it’s a connection issue since it was working fine before. But i can’t afford to pay more for checking up on that.. it’s certainly not something essential for the truck to work. Getting to 300k in about 5000 miles! It’s a farm truck!
I have another issue, the mechanic told me my rear differentials’ seal that attaches the driveshaft is leaking. I am sure it wasn’t leaking before since i had so much stuff done on it before it got in the dealership. I got it lifted a couple times before (brake change, bearing, etc) my local mechanic never mentionned it and i was also under my truck for inspection. I feel he doesn’t want to charge me for the rear differential oil change since it’s probably really expensive. I just feel it’s kind of unfair since i’ll have to get it done quickly and i don’t feel very confortable knowing my rear differential is leaking!? I think i should let them know about my concerns with that. Thanks for your thoughts.

I just remembered that i think they also changed both two rear lights when i was in for recall because they were broken. I got them changed for 2 aftermarket ones. Could there be an issue from that light replacement since the backup camera should come on when the backup lights also turn on when i put the truck in reverse? Does anyone know if the backup lights and camera are somehow connected together. Maybe they could of forgot to hook up camera or messed up when they changed lights. I just remember the chief mechanic saying he was puzzled why the camera wasn’t working. I have seen great posts here in tacoma world about backup camera issues.
