I am looking for a camper shell for my 2001 x-tra cab. I was told that the reg cab and the x-tra cab are different and a shell that fit the reg cab would not fit the x-tra cab. Is this true? Also, are there any other trucks that share the same dimensions as ours? Thanks for the help!

I can x2 that the reg. cab wont fit the xtra cab. The top of the cap will hit the cab before the cap is far enough forward for a good fit.

don't know for sure about the '01s but just measure the length of your bed from the front to the tailgate and then when you talk to a dealer or a craig's lister or whoever, you can say your bed is so long and so wide. the '09 long bed is narrower in the front (near the cab) than it is at the rear, and the A.R.E. fits perfect. see gallery

The rear cab wall profiles are different for all 1995.5 - 2004 Tacomas.

Regular Cab rear cab walls are essentially vertical.

XtraCab rear cab walls are sloped slightly forward.

Shells / toppers / canopies designed specifically for one or the other will have a front end shaped to match that cab style's particular 'slope'.

Put a shell designed for a Regular Cab on an XtraCab and you're likely to get a noticeable gap that widens from bottom to top.

Put a shell designed to fit up close on an XtraCab onto a Regular Cab and the top leading edge might actually run into the rear cab wall.
