Looking for ideas on how I can mount some sort of hoisting system to lift my shell off my truck by myself. I have a rack system on top of my shell (Leer w/Yakima rails) but I'm too paranoid to lift from these. What do you use?

I’ve kept it simple over the years. 4 eye bolts into the ceiling joists. Use two 2x4 pieces of lumber w/ an eye bolt on each end and slide that into place under the camper shell.

I lift and lower using 4 cam straps like this:

I made one for a Jeep top. Rubber covered S hooks on 4 appropriately length lines (to balance). The lines are hooked to a ring. The ring is attached to the lifting line. The line goes over a rafter mounted sheave. Over to the side of the garage through another sheave and down to a hand cranked reel. Disconnect the fasteners, connect the S hooks and crank it up.

Pretty much the same here. Some 20 years ago I purchased a cam strap camper hoist system off of JC Whitney. It has worked great for me on 4 different caps in two different garages. JC Whitney hasn't carried it for years now and can't find anything like it any where.
Your system will be the replacement when mine wears out.
