Camper shell rack

Hi I need help
I’m trying to instal a roof top tent in top of my camper shell but the shell only can hold 175 pounds.
I need something like the picture
Can anyone help me

That definitely looks like a custom one-off that requires hacking up your topper, you sure you wanna do that?

Having the tent that high up kills MPG and can make your rig awfully tippy too...

yeah. bye bye warranty if you cut it up like that. Most toppers have 2 different weight ratings. Dynamic and static. your rating at 175lbs might just be the dynamic weight rating... meaning the rating of what the topper can hold while you do donuts in the mall and hit jumps on trails.

The weight rating for static... meaning the rating of what the topper can hold while you sleep all cuddled up and cozy... is much much higher than 175.

But I can't say what your toppers actual ratings are. that's just how most are rated.

find out exactly what your rating is.... is it 175 dynamic? if so, is your tent under 175 lbs? if so you're good if not, then you'll have to modify something

 

If you really feel the need to carry a RTT get a low rise cross bar system that allows to mount the tent about even with the roofline of the truck, lowers the CG considerably and doesn't hit MPG as bad, however from the looks of it, the rear bumper the big tires the lift cut fenders, like me miles per gallon doesn't matter so much anymore.




As for gear, get some water tight boxes and id you need extra security a roll-n-lock "garage door" tonneau cover.

 

As someone who deals with structural FRC (fiber reinforced composites like truck toppers are) on a daily basis, you could also go to a fab shop and have them make internal aluminum ribs to support and transfer the load to the bed rails from the inside, done right they could be removable and not require cutting the topper.

 

I just called snug top and the told me that the shell can hold 175 static

 

So as long as your RTT weight doesn't exceed that when it has bedding and is wet you're fine to mount it, another consideration is getting load bars like Yakima or the like that will transfer the weight from the middle of the fiberglass where it's weakest and must bear the load across the fibers to closer to the vertical edges edges where it can support the load more strongly.

That doesn't sound right. Leer told me static weight capacity is 600 lbs on all their caps.

 

Depends of the series I suppose, all their X series may be but all their Y series can't. Different thickness different resins, different glass chop strand, woven, layed up or sprayed up etc.

I would suggest a quality rack like
Prinsu, front runner, or victory 4x4
And the GFC superlite RTT
it weighs 80lb

 

How much do most ya’lls RTTs weigh?
