Just got my Taco a little over a week ago. Came with a shell on it, just wondering what people's thoughts are on the shells. Mine is a vent window lockable ARE.

My truck had one on it when I bought it too. I toyed around with it for three years (taking it off and leaving it back on). For me, the only real benefit I found was when I was camping (about once a year) and when I took my dog somewhere in the summer (during the winter she rides with me in the cab). The downside was how much it limited bed access when I was moving stuff. I ended up selling it this past summer. Very happy without it.

I agree with the bed access for sure. Plus when I get it muddy with all of my waterfowl gear, it makes it a pain to try and hose it out.

I haven't taken mine off in well over 2 years - probably getting close to 3. Every spring I remove all of the gear and the sleeping platform to hose out the dirt and accumulated other "stuff". I don't remove the shell to hose the truck out.

The truck I bought came with it, when I knew I was buying this truck I was hell bent on removing it but after driving it and thinking about all the utility it provides for camping, ice fishing etc decided to keep it.

Mine is a Raider Nomad 2. I can't say I would buy one if I didn't have one but to sell it and need one again later seemed stupid to me.

Not a fan, had one on a past truck. Always more inconvenient than not.

I always get a cap. Camping and secure storage. Never took it off my 1st gen except to redo the seals after 10 years. The dealer can't get the new one on my 2015 sealed in the front corner yet. Doesn't leak bad but leaking caps. tents and raingear are not acceptable.

there is a soft putty like product that my installer used. mine is dry as it's gonna get. i do have some leaking that i get at the car wash, it comes from the bed cap cover. i will pull the cap off in spring, remove the bed cap, silicone under the plastic cap and reinstall. a tailgate gasket is a must. the toyota is tough to get sealed, that 3/4" drop from the side to the front is hard to seal.

Love mine. Bought my truck specifically because it was a TRD OR and had the topper.

It really just comes down to how you want to use the truck. I don't use the bed for anything other than the occasional Lowes trip. I'm not a contractor or landscaper. I can easily pull a small trailer for toys. Personally, I wanted the topper because we use it for securing and weatherproofing cargo. We also use it for camping (can sleep comfortable in it as opposed to the short-bed). It's truly perfect for us. If I ever do need to haul something large I'll just yank it off and leave it in the garage. Best of both worlds in my opinion.

I keep kicking around the idea of getting one just so I can keep stuff in the bed without worrying about it getting stolen.

How are you doing with all that snow in Nevada I keep hearing about lately? Do you prep your 2wd any differently?

If someone wants it badly enough they'll simply take it. I like to think it keeps an honest man honest though. Auto insurance covers the rest.

For what I do (fish, hunt, camp, canoe, kayak, dogs) I'll never be without a cap/shell as long as I'm driving a pickup truck.
