Camper shells anyone?

So I am thinking about buying a cap for my truck. I wonder who the best cap manufacturer is. I know Snugtop people will say Snugtop but really, who makes the best one regardless of the cost?

 

snugtop, leer,A.R.E.,the top three. dealer service,install,very important. i've had all three. i think the snugtop is better,however that is not always the case, they all have made some "less than ideal caps. good luck

Damn, Damn, DAMN!!!!

I was thinking about a cap, especially the A.R.E. MX Walk-in model (mostly because it just seemed so necessary), but I then started thinking about my NEEDS. Inasmuch as I wanted that cap (in the same way I originally wanted the F150 Ecoboost or the Ram Ecodiesel) I knew it exceeded my needs. So, I looked at other caps that seemed more sensible and reasonable.

I looked at all of the other caps. While looking, I asked myself, "why do I NEED the cap?" The answer was because 1) I wanted something that would allow me to store trash, recyclables, and cardboard boxes to take to the dump; and, 2) I wanted something that would allow me to store a cooler, upright, when I camped, all of three times in a year (for a total of about 10 days a year).

I would love nothing more right now than a cap (especially that MX Walk-in ) but, with the Undercover SE tonneau cover I have, and considering all of the limited uses I really have for a cap, I'll just say that Christmas has passed and I didn't buy a cap..............yet.

How do you like that top? I'm thinking soft top.

 

I love everything about it except for the fact that I cant put a rack on top of it!

Love the storage shelf idea. I have the same cap, but with my sleeping platform above the wheel wells. This is a very interesting setup. I've always wondered what I would do if/when I get a dog. I think I might have to play with the idea of a shelf rather than a platform in the future.

 

Here's my Raider cap. Wouldnt go without it. Keeps my tools safe and out of sight. Awesome if you have a dog to haul around as well.

 

It's a LEER. I don't know what model. It's really practical for my uses. Oh, and it doesn't look bad either. I scored it used. Actually, I traded it straight across for another one that I had bought on CL for $450.

 

I've had two snugtops, and I don't think I necessarily recommend them. The one I had on my T100 seemed to have been adapted from a regular 1/2 ton American footprint and it always leaked a little up front because the fit was a little flawed. I had caulk on the tiny gaps, but it was a little disconcerting for an expensive shell. But I liked the way the latch worked. To lock it you push it into a recess. Makes it a tiny bit harder to break into unless you're really good at picking locks. The one I got for my Taco has a different flaw. It's a taller one, and yet the hatch only goes up to about my eyebrow level. I'm 6'1", so I'm a little on the tall side, but it should open a little higher. Also my headliner smelled a little mouldy when it was new.

Whatever you get, make sure you look at it in person first. That would have saved me on my snugtop. I just ordered it after checking it out on the web site.

 

I like my Leer 100R. Fits great, doesn't leak at all, and matches the lines of the truck, er, SUV.

I wanted one for my dogs to ride in, camping, built in sleeping quarters, stowing gear and keeping it dry. Pretty pleased with it so far, and even more excited to find an exact fit and color match on Craigslist for $500 for a Leer 100R. It has the contractor windows on the side that flip up which makes access to the bed pretty good. Only real complaint is now that it's winter the back needs a defrost or something. Not supposed to scrape with an ice scraper, so I've been trying a 2:1 rubbing alcohol spray bottle to get the ice off. Other than that it's up to the side mirrors. I think the damn thing looks freaking sweet too!

 

Well, anything that encourages you to know how to use your side mirrors is a good thing

But really? Not supposed to scrape? Why? I scrape the crap out of whatever needs scraping on my truck. Tint?

 

Leer website says do not use ice scraper. I tried anyways and it scratched the back glass pretty good. Won't do that again!

 

Huh. I'll be jiggered.

Well, I'm not going to even check snuggies site. If scraping the rear of mine will scratch the glass, so be it. My truck is a tool not a family heirloom. If it needs scraping it'll be scraped.

I wonder if they put the tinting layer on the outside?
