I haven't done much of it in years. As I get closer to retirement, I think of all the places I want to go.

Just a bunch of old crap
Did a day hike this weekend up to Humphrey's Peak out here in AZ. It's our tallest peak, at 12,633' elevation. 10 mile trail (round trip), 3,300 elevation gain. This past Saturday was crazy up north because the weather was nasty, and the entire mountain was in the clouds and fog for the majority of our ascent. 3rd time for me, first time for the wife. The weather cleared just as we got to the summit, which worked out perfectly so that my wife didn't miss the views. The weather for the entire top half of the mountain was in the dense clouds with 40mph sustained winds and temps in the mid 40's without factoring in windchill. Great day to get out of the heat of Phoenix!

    Gear
    • Osprey Atmos 65 - I'm pack training, so I loaded it up to 25# (water, snacks, jacket, light first aid, etc.)
    • Marmot Kompressor Plus pack (wife's) - 3L water and jacket
    • Trekking poles
    • My clothes - Hybrid shorts, WoolX boxers, Columbia rain pants, North Face windbreaker/waterproof jacket, WoolX merino wool T, wool People Socks, Merrell Moab ventilators, Outdoor Research lightweight gaiters, shemaugh
    • Wife's clothes - yoga pants (lol), synthetic t shirt, Cabela's windbreaker/waterproof shell jacket, Cabela's cotton socks (ugh, trying to get her away from those), sock liners, shemagh
    • Didn't bring the gloves and beanies but surprisingly didn't need them

I don't own one of those packs, but my pack does creak when I am hiking in it, I actually use it as a beat to keep my moving. hahaha

I have a Deuter ACT 40+10 and love it. Have been very happy with it so far.

ok so i posted a while back, anyone have suggestions to make the osprey day pack not rub the inside of my arm pits so bad? Its not over loaded and its position correctly...maybe I am just too big a guy for it? I am very broad shoulder and chest

Anyone have any experience with the Ursack? https://www.rei.com/product/895691/ursack-s293-allwhite-bear-bag I am planning to do a few trips around Bishop/Mammoth other parts of the Sierras and Sequoia this year. Was wonder how these are and if they are approved for those areas? Seems like it would be a lot lighter and easier to pack then the bear vault.

Check the area regulations though. In many spots in the Sierras, bear canisters are required instead of bags. Smart bears out there.

If you overnight in SEKI, you MUST carry a bear canister. Ursack does not qualify. If you're outside SEKI Ursack is great. But still not bear proof.

Only SEKI and Yose require cans.

I get the same issues with day packs. Broad shoulders and chest are a bit of a disadvantage with most pack fittings for me, particularly the small packs.

Me too, but the Stratos 24 I recently got actually fits me pretty well in that area. I like it!

Try the Marmot Kompressor Plus. Works great for me. I forget it's even on, but it's very lightweight and without any internal structure. Great summit pack, and comfortable up to 10# of gear.
