    Just the basics
I use a "glow in the dark" Nalgene. Not sure if it is tritan plastic. If I put boiled/hot water in the bottle it does have a different taste afterwards.

The glowing Nalgenes that I used to have were Lexan.

Yea the newer bottles are fine for hot liquids. If i remember correctly Nalgene quit using standard plastics several years back because of the concern of them heating up and leaching into the water. Unfortunately, due to that change, they quit guaranteeing them being unbreakable. Back in the day they would replace a broken bottle free of charge and send you a tshirt or something if you managed to break one.

From Wiki regarding the new Nalgene plastic:

"Unfortunately, BPA-free Tritan plastics were later found to leach other estrogenic chemicals in a cell-based assay.[15]Eastman Chemical, the manufacturer of Tritan, will not disclose any information about this product or its composition."

Ok I waited for the Garmin website update to see if that cleared the issue. Any of you inreach guys deal with this before? All I get is the orange triangle/exclamation point under plans/devices. If I edit a message or anything that requires a sync it tells me sync required but the sync tab never shows up?

I use "inReach Sync" as a separate program.

yes there is a download that I have as well. The typical protocol I have experienced is I change something requiring a sync a separate tab appears on top saying sync, then click to launch the garmin app and complete the data sync.

Edit the sync app does work and does update messages etc. however still have no idea what the orange triangle and exclamation point means.

I would have to do it to recall what I do.
I have not had a problem except for the MANY times that it does not sync.

This thing is 10 years old. It's been dropped countless times. It doesn't hold any liquid taste from hot or cold beverages. It has no chemical leaching. Worth every penny IMO.

Never had any issues with Nalgene, I've got several including the silo (really tall ones). Leeching seems to be the concern with everything. I've used titanium pots and pans for a little while, but they tend to warp from high heat. Also have a titanium canteen that's good, but you have to let it sit a while to cool down.

Welp, my long weekend ended just as fast as it started. 2.3 miles into passage 5 the beginning of my 45-50 mile weekend my left ankle gave out. Luckily i knew my buddy was 1.5 miles ahead of me with my truck checking out Kentucky camp. I had a painful slow self rescue the final 1.5 miles to camp where i had to give him the bad news the weekend was over. Not wanting to admit defeat i tried icing it there to see if I could continue to the next road crossing. That didn't work. Decided to backtrack a bit in the truck and set up camp for the night to see if it was better this morning. Iced it more in the freezing cold creek.

Woke up this morning to the conclusion trying to push on would only lead to a real rescue so packed up and headed home. Fear is a grade 2 ligament tear. 20181026_114911.jpg 20181026_135413.jpg 20181026_132449.jpg 20181026_102541.jpg

That sucks, but you definitely made the right call to bail. The trail will still be there once you are healed. Really hope your fears are wrong and it is something that heals up fast!

Thanks Ken I'm hoping for the best too. My wife's had multiple ankle surgeries and never seams to miss a diagnosis for some strange reason agrees with me. Gonna go see a her ankle doc asap. But looks like I might be down for a while. The good news is i was on pace to finish in 8 months on a 12 month plan so i have some leeway to still finish roughly as planned even if I'm down for a month or three

I wondered about the nalgene change. I still use the solid color bottles I have from 10 years ago and I've noticed they carry a funky taste sometimes. I put boiling water in one to heat my quilt last weekend in pisgah, maybe time to replace with the newer ones

Here is a couple more of Kentucky Camp and the couple miles I was able to do. The Forest Service has been doing a great job restoring the buildings

MRI appears to show a small tear in a tendon plus a good sized bone spur on my heel that is bugging the hell out of me right now since I am limping around not putting any weight on the ball of my left foot. Wont know more until I see doc again in 10 days, but looks like I am gonna be down >30 days

In the meantime to fulfill my outdoors time I am gonna cache water and some snacks for the current southbound AZT hikers at some remote spots along the trail. at least that gets me and the truck outdoors doing something besides sitting on a couch.

First outing in my new REI Camp Dome 2 at Bryce Canyon last week. Rained the first night, but I stayed dry. Lows of 29 a couple of nights, but was pretty comfortable in the tent and my North Face Cat’s Meow sleeping bag.
