Did the same thing in Oct last year in the sierras. Was 25 at night and I’m damn glad I had a 0 degree bag, lol. Was just curious if anyone has any recommendations on a winter ready tent that isn’t 15 lbs, lol. Tough to find a backpack ready bag that’s good in that weather that isn’t heavy as hell.

Anyone enjoy building their shelter from time to time?

My wife and I sleep in the 4Runner usually but lately we’ve been using a tarp and some dead trees to build some interesting shelters just for fun.

Just got a second saw to make the work go faster.

I was doing pretty good the first two nights with my setup and lows in the single digits. The thing that got me was watching the other guys getting up and getting dressed with a heater and a coffee pot

what I’ve found is the smaller the tent the more it holds in the heat (even if it’s not a 4 season tent). My fly creek has always treated me well in the cold. Only downside is that I’m 6’2 250 and so getting dressed in it is impossible

I use a 3 season with two pads instead of one. If it's really gonna be cold I pack my Moonstone Denali -15 bag. I usually have to leave it unzipped. lol

My buddy ran a luxe outdoors hexpeak tipi in the beartooth mountains. 40 mph plus wind 6 inches of snow and dime sized hail and it held up.

Hey, guys, I need to ask a favor. I’m wanting to put together an external frame pack and I could use the frame dimensions from something like a Kelty or Jansport, or something similar. I can find the dimensions an ALICE pack frame, but I’d rather try to reproduce one of the aforementioned packs. If you have one of these packs and could grab a tape measure and give me the length and width, pulse the number of crossmembers, I would really appreciate it. I know in the long run it would be cheaper to buy an Alps Mountaineering Zion or a Kelty Trekker 65, but I like to build things and I’ve always been intrigued by the external frame pack. Thanks for your help.

Width of most frames is 15" outside. Height floor to top of bag is 30". This one is extra tall at 40" to top bar.20200425_083357.jpg

Thanks, Keith. Are you just really tall? And does the frame get narrower in the middle or is that one of those optical delusions, lol.
