I like that area. I’ve hiked in the Red River Geological Gorge a couple of times over the past few years.

The Sheltowee Trace Challenge hikers pack one weekend a month, twice in April and pack the whole 350 mile Trace in 11months. In April we'll hike through the gorge.

Haha, sorry. I figured no one cared.

I’m trying out the Altra Lone peak 5 hikers.
I’ve been a big fan of lone peaks for trail, trail running, and some work outs since the lone peak 4s. They are a zero drop shoe, that’s kind of Altras claim to fame. Same with the large toe box for splaying them little toes.

For anyone that doesn’t know what zero drop is, there’s plenty of in-depth details about it on the interwebs. It makes a difference to me. The runners ironically have been pretty popular in the thru/sectional backpackers area for some time. These are the hikers, and I won’t probably have a solid opinion on them till after the summer. However, after a 6 mile jog today, so far so good.

    Just the basics
I've been wearing the Altra Torin 2.5 plush for work and it is one of, if not the, best shoes I've worn in more than 20 years in health care.

Thanks for the info, I'd never heard of this brand before. They look like they could fit my feet very well, I'll have to remember to check them out next time I'm shopping for running or hiking shoes.

I've had a couple pairs of the lone peaks (I felt they both wore holes in the upper too quickly) and am on my second pair of Superiors and they are in fact superior. Lone peaks are good for long haul hiking with the extra cushion, but the Superiors are the bee's knees.

Anyone here have any experience with Zpacks gaiters? I’ve ordered a set for myself and while haven’t seen them yet am sweating their durability.

The only gaiters i use are the Dirty girl gaiters with my Altra trail runners. Light, sleek and simple.

I use some OR mountaineering ones also, but thats obviously for snow hiking only.

I've got 3 pairs of Outdoor Research gaiter and I'd highly recommend those. I usually go with the full height gaiter except for one pair I've got for use with low-top trail runners.

From left to right it's the gortex crocodile expedition gaiters, Rocky Mountain gaiters, and the low tops I can't recall the name. I get the most use out of the rocky mountain version.

So after talking with a friend I think I’m going to get an Osprey Stratos 34 pack and set it up as a day hike go bag. That way if I’m on a trail and want to stay the night I will have that option.

What my plans are to have packed inside:
•Mid-Layer fleece hoodie [Black Diamond factor hoodie]
•top layer [Outdoor ResearchShadow insulated jacket]
•rain coat [Outdoor Research Helium rain jacket]
•bivy [Outdoor Research HeliumBivy] [hoping the dog and I can fit]
•sleeping bag [Mountain Hardware Bishop pass 30 degree]
•sleeping pad [Therm-a-Rest ProLite sleeping pad]
•stove [MSR Pocket Rocket inside a Snow Peaks Trek 700 titanium pot]
•fire & water [sawyer squeeze plusbic lighter and fire plugs]
    •power [Anker powercore 10000]
•odd and ends [food and snacks and items for the dog, he does have hisown pack that he carries food andother stuff]

It’s going to primarily be a 2-3season pack, the warmer months. May get one of those Sea to Summitsleeping bag liners to add warmth inthe fall. I own everything except the pack and the sleeping bag.

Would like to hear your thoughts onthe set up.
