    Plus, best to at least know how you are breaking the law... i.e. using marine channels...

    Wish I could have tagged along on this trip too but work...

    We use marine radio's hunting zone b Mendocino, about 3-4 miles from the coast as the crow flies. One day on a ridgetop the CG came on air and bitched us out, we looked it up and were on a dedicated ship-to-shore freq....oops. As for unlicensed ham I guess there is some amateur radio guys that will track you down but it seems like that's more if you have a home station or are using a HT in one place and are jamming up the airwaves alot. The fines are large though, probably better to take the test.
