One issue we all face when exploring more popular or certain desert trails, like in redrock country, is what to do with human waste? Yes, burying it may be OK in some remote places, but not in others. It’s especially not good to bury it if its where others tread, where you may destroy sensitive desert soil crusts, or if it’s simply not allowed (like backcountry in Canyonlands NP), or simply if someone wants the comforts of home to do it. So, there may be times where you truly may have to pack it all out.

Anyways, this guy has a great low cost portable solution to this problem that he’s been giving away to homeless people in Seattle and it would also make a good low-cost and very portable kit for us to take remote camping:

I made that exact set up to bring along when I was first getting my wife out and camping. Works pretty well but the pee tends to really fill up the bucket. We ended up using it for only #2 and it was nice compared to shitting in a hole.

Stopped using it though because it was just one more thing to pack. Would work wonderfully though if there’s no other options.

Another reason to bring it - comforts of home for some that need it! Made edits above, thanks!

    Great thread topic.

I’ve been using a surplus rocket box and these bags for a while now and it’s worked great. I don’t urinate in them; I just follow the accepted rules of not peeing near water or campsites. The bags have an integrated heavy duty ziploc bag that you use to contain the waste bag once it’s full. Pretty sanitary, and way better than digging a cat hole.

That’s pretty nifty. When you say surplus rocket box, like an ammo can?

Yeah, buddy. Just a basic 20mm rocket box.

I keep all of my camp toilet stuff in a stuff sack in the box along with my rechargeable shower and collapsible bucket. The footprint of the box makes it super easy to pack too. I usually put it in the back passenger corner where it fits perfectly behind the wheel well.

Nice truck, by the way! I’ve always dug it.

That’s a clever set up. Do you have any pics? This sounds like something I want to do.

This is pretty much it. Only things missing are the little 6” stuff sac that I keep TP and hand sanitizer and stuff in and a small toilet seat. The box seal is still in great condition so I don’t smell anything while the lid is on.

As an aside, the camp shower setup is totally worth it. Takes up minimal space and feels awesome on longer trips. Just an old school shower bag to warm up water and a collapsible bucket for the USB chargeable pump that connects to the shower head.

Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to grab those pics.

Re: camp shower, I couldn’t agree more. I go the solar shower route and it makes you feel like a new person after a day out wheeling in humid weather.

I run these bags in a 5 gallon paint bucket with giant sharpie marker "poo inside" on the bucket. It gets a laugh

“A Simple Homeless Camp Toilet“? I prefer to call it a “simple houseless camp toilet”- Home is where the heart is, after all, or at least where the toilet is. I’m really glad everybody isn’t just doing the “Sierra schmear”!

But really. What are you supposed to do with your bag-o-crap? I'm going camping this weekend for the first time after knee surgery and a crap bucket would be great to not squat and hurt my leg.

Really? I could have sworn dumping human waste into your regular trash or something had regulations and needs to be handled like used motor oil and goes to a special place...but if so that makes it easy

That depends. WAG bags have chemicals inside that gel the waste and render it pretty much inert, so that can just be tossed in the trash. Just be careful WHOSE trash you throw it in, lol...

The RV style chem toilets should be flushed either down the toilet or at an RV dump station. I don't really prefer these for 4x4's since you need more space for them, and additional (liquid) chemicals (the blue water).

Whatever you do, don't just poop in a plastic bag. You can purchase bulk chemicals like those in WAG bags, and dump some of that in a bag before use.

I would highly recommend not using a "communal" bag for dookie. Imagine how much poo is generated from 4 people over just a few days, then imagine trying to pick up that single bag. :puke:

Consider single use, sealable bags. They are easier to handle because the waste is compartmentalized. Plus, if a bag were to burst, the mess is more contained.
