Hello. Looks like my kid will be moving up to Bandon, OR. here in the near future. Bandon is about an 8 hour drive from me unfortunately.

I am not made of money and can't afford to stay in hotels all the time when I go and visit..... I was wondering if there was any free areas for dispersed camping around Bandon....or any affordable camping I could look into up there should I wanted to drop in for a few days to a week at a time.

I saw there is a nice state beach (Bullards Beach) campground there in Bandon and I saw there appears to be a KOA south of there.....just wondering if there are any other alternatives the TW members in the North West forum would recommend? I typically tent camp and or since I have a softopper I also do a lot of sleeping in the bed of my truck when I camp.

Any suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks in advance for any advice or help given. Appreciate your time.

Consider that most National Forests in Oregon have dispersed camping readily available. Bandon is 20-30 miles north of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. If you are on a visit with a campsite reserved or hotel booked maybe take half a day and poke around the National Forest and look for the free dispersed sites. Major downside to this is that you might be 40+ minute drive from Bandon.

I feel like this is a good excuse to go exploring a really incredibly scenic forest. Maybe use google maps to pick a couple areas of interest and then see where you end up. With a willingness to sleep in the bed of your truck you should be able to find something nice (and free) that meets your needs. You might call the ranger district and make sure any plans you make are lawful or to get advice. (You would most likely be in the Powers District of the Forest (541) 439-6200). In general I've found ranger districts to be quite helpful planning this sort of thing.

Thank you so much for the information and the phone number for the Powers District. I will definitely look into this area as especially as the spring and summer months approach I would like to pick up my kid and take her out to explore Oregon. The research I have done so far looks like there are just so many beautiful things to see up there.

I was reading you have to gain OHV permits so I will have to look into that. But I would love to explore the forests up there for some good dispersed camping spots. Google maps is a great suggestion as well.

Looks like I have some more research to do. Thank you for the suggestions!

I highly recommend getting a forest recreational pass they're year round and cost like 30 bucks.

Thanks....I will look into that. With the amount of time I will be up there it would more than pay for itself sooner rather than later.

There's free camping near the North Spit in Coos bay area ~30-45 minutes from Bandon. It's one of the few spots you can dispersed camp on/near the beach. It's pretty popular though.

Terrific. Thanks for the heads up. 45 mins is not too far of a drive to get back to Bandon. I will have to look further into this area as well. Again thanks for the tip!!
