It’s actually warmer to sleep on the ground then in a RTT or Bed tent. The ground temperature never gets as cold as the air.

Not enough to have a build thread.
I bunjee a tarp over my shell to give a little extra insulation, sleep on about 6" of foam, and use a heater. It's pretty comfy :D

Are you kidding? At night time the ground is more cold than air on the same level like RTT. It's because of cooling down massive amount without sun radiation. I remember my latest camping in a ground tent on the airbed mattress and the air inside mattress become very cold because of close connection to the ground. Now in RTT it's very comfortable to sleep in cold areas. The double foam mattress in my RTT is very good and warm.

Wrong, If the air drops to 28 at night the ground will never get that cold. Exact reason snow falls from the sky and then melts when it hits the ground. Comparing two camping trips and sleeping situations you had is not scientific. Don’t believe me do some research.

Not to get between you guys on this but I was taught to also believe that the ground is always going to be colder during NIGHT hours or when there is no sun (without any heating pads or anything). Granted the guy on the forum you posted does know how to camp in the cold - I wouldn't go as far to say that the ground is any warmer than an RTT.

"...the height you are measuring the temperature is also very important! In other words, what is important is the temperature where the frost actually formed (e.g. near the ground). On certain nights, the temperature at the thermometer level (a few feet above ground) remains slightly above freezing, while temperature where the frost forms is in fact at or below freezing!

The height of the thermometer on most weather stations is taken 2-meters (or about 6 feet) above ground level (AGL). Because cold air sinks relative to warm air, and because the ground radiates heat very efficiently during calm, clear nights, the temperature at or near ground level can often be several degrees cooler than the temperature at the 2-meter thermometer height."

My head is spinning...guys just have 2 or 3 extra drinks before you go to sleep when camping and you won't care if you sleep in the snow. Just saying :notsure:

The first rule of RTTs is you do not talk about RTTs.

Nice. I was going to say the earth is a great thermal mass. It’ll be warmer then the air but still colder than a person so it’ll just suck the heat right out.

Also the frost on the ground (or windshield) can form above freezing temps due to evaporatation. The water(dew) goes from a liquid to gas and absorbs the heat out of the water around it causing it to freeze.

    Yay physics.

Sometimes I don't even sleep in a tent, much less a RTT.

I'm from Russia, I know what is cold weather, believe me. And I'm comparing not only two camp nights, but many. From scientific point of view, just google it, man:
