    Just as the title states.

I have a 2003 Toyota Camry that struggles to start every time I fuel up.

I can't figure out what it is. I have replaced the filler neck and the gas cap.

It happens every time I fill the gas tank:

First time I turn the key after fueling, engine starts but car has rough idle, then shuts off.

I try turning it on and engine turns but won't start. Need to try starting it two or three times for the car to start.

I have no problems any other time. ONLY after a fill up.

    295,000 miles, 4 cylinder.

Tank fuel filter? fuel pump? Check pressure before/after fill-up.

I've thought about that... but if it was the pump or filter, wouldn't it happen every time?

Replace your purge valve, this is what is causing your car to not want to start after refueling.

Is there a check engine light? If so, did you pull the codes? Are you sure you replaced the purge valve and not the fuel filter? The purge valve is what releases the fuel vapors to be burned by the engine. If the valve is stuck, it will be hard to start after you gas up. Avoid topping off at the gas station as this will damage the purge valve.

Even if I don't top it off, the problem still happens.

Do you let the car sit for a length of time any other time? Or do you restart the vehicle within 5 min other times?

The car is my daily driver. I restart it multiple times a day.

Like I asked do you restart it within 5 min at other times during the day?

It only has a rough start, as if it was flooded, after I fuel up. The only way around it is to fuel up with the vehicle running.

I have replaced the gas cap twice, thinking the first was "defective".

I replaced the fuel filler neck.

I have replaced both purge valves.

Still get the issue. I've had it for over a year, I'm just getting tired of it.

Ok do you have a fast idle when the vehicle is cold like 1200-1500 rpm?

I really don't think so, out of all the vehicles I have, the 4runner is the only one that does that... We have had cold mornings lately, I can double check the Camry tomorrow morning

Ok 2 things I want you to do.
You need that fast idle when cold.
If not then the next time you fuel up just touch the gas and hold it for 5 seconds while you crank it up. Like your manually getting it to about 1200 rpm. After 5 seconds let the gas pedal go slowly to idle.
If it idles fine then first you need to clean the throttle body plate and housing especially along the edges of the blade. You don't need to remove the throttle body right now. Once done see if you get the fast idle when cold and see if it makes a difference during fuel up. If you still don't have a fast idle the the next poss. problem is your AIS or IAC motor depending on your way of saying it.
That motor compensates for your start up hot and cold. I think once you get a cold idle up your other problem will go away.

So my ideal cold start up range is 1200 - 1500 RPMS , correct?

Wait, so what does the cold idle starting have to do with the starting after fueling the camry after its already warmed up and what not?

I definitely need to look into cleaning that throttle body as well. .. hmm..

It varies from year and make but if it's cold out and a cold start rpm is the same as warm rpm or close to it then it's not right.
