    Is this a hard fault? Like does the code come back consistently if you clear it?

    Might sound like a stupid question but you're using 5w-30 right?

    Did a shop do the work? What are they saying?

    @craigs1 what do you think?

    How did the cam break? What made you do the head job?

    They said there was a hairline fracture on the cam but it was fine. Put it back one. Then it broke . Got another. Put everything back. Idles good. No weird noises or vibrations. Did the head job .had p0306 code and had the swooshing sound of antifreeze .so I knew my head gasket was shot .

    Well... it might need the sprocket/vvt assembly at the front of the cam on that bank.:notsure:

    But before you buy more parts you should check the cam/crank timing really good

    Seems like you've ruled out the VVT filter and oil control valve. That leaves the wiring from the oil control valve to the ECM, and the VVT actuator assembly (big dual sprocket canister on the intake cam). Given the crazy break on that cam, it's possible that the actuator was damaged...locking pin maybe took a hit, or metal debris got washed into it and jammed the vane.

    I'd try disconnecting the oil control valve and running the engine to see if the ECM monitors that circuit. If it does, you should get a P0010 code and some assurance that the wiring is good.

    If that checks out, the VVT actuator can be replaced without removing the timing cover. I did mine last year while ruling out possible P0016 causes. Just need to pull the passenger side valve cover and the 4-bolt timing chain tensioner cover. Stuff a shop rag into the hole below the #1 tensioner to prevent any debris/etc from falling into the engine.

    As far as milling the heads...this shortens the travel distance of the timing chain on OHC engines, having an effect similar to timing chain stretch. Yours got 0.005" removed on both heads. While you have it open to replace the VVT actuator, snap a pic of the #1 chain tensioner before you remove it. Offhand, I'd say that if this milling was the problem, you'd be seeing a P0016 correlation error. edit: meaning this does not likely account for your P0012 error code.

    Thank you for the info. I'll pass it along to the mechanic and hopefully it makes the trouble shooting much easier because so far I am just as confused as he is .I'll update you on what he says after he opens it up again .
